Everyone has a memory of Lyndon Slewidge. Whether your like me and you remember going to a Sens game as kid and seeing him do his signature sign off as he finished the anthems. Or even as some one who goes casually to games, the man just sticks out. Lyndon Slewidge is as much a part of the Senators organization as Daniel Alfredsson or Chris Phillips. Bruce Garrioch broke news yesterday that the anthem singer of 24 years has been left without a contract for the teams 25th anniversary season. Of all the contracts fans would have liked to see the team shell out over 25 years (Alfie anyone?) this one stings a lot.
Lyndon Slewidge is a retired OPP officer from Sault Ste. Marie. He relocated to Ottawa in 1992 as a part of the “Bring Back the Senators” campaign. He has been the anthem singer for 24 years and with what the organization is calling a huge year for both hockey and the Sens, they leave a franchise staple with no contract. Lyndon has been with the team for all the highs and lows. Game three of the 2007 cup finals (The only cup finals win in franchise history) as well as the games honouring Mark Reeds and Roger Neilson. In a statement release by the team yesterday the Senators said: “As part of the Senators 25th anniversary celebrations, the team is trying a number of new in-arena activations for the fans, including inviting other performers and artists to sing the national anthems,”. ““This does not mean Lyndon will not be invited to sing at games in the future, just not as often as he had in previous seasons.” The club continued. rnrnWhile I understand the teams wants for something new and fresh, Lyndon is a huge part of the team and loved by the fan base. With so many huge games coming this season including Alfie’s retirement night and a possible outdoor game why leave him like that? Here to hoping that the organization listens to the fan backlash over the last day and a half and brings Lyndon back into the fold for the 25th season.
