GM Jim Rutherford has in the past been able to correct mistakes that he has made. He removed Mike Johnston as coach. He dealt away Hunwick when it was clear that didnt work, and he moved on from Derrick Brassard. However, it is plainly obvious to anyone who follows the game that Jack Johnson may go down as one of the worst free agent signings in NHL history. His play does not pass the eye test, nor does it measure up in terms of fancy stats either. Players routinely underperform when paired with or on the ice with him. This was true in Columbus and unfortunately is true again in Pittsburgh. Recently, a Pens fan blog posted a chart with SF% with vs without Johnson. Just about every single player had a higher number WITHOUT Johnson on the ice.
The time has come to put Johnson in the press box where he belongs. The season has been a total disappointment so far, but there is still time to correct what ails this team. That starts with Johnson never suiting up in a Penguins uniform again (at least for the rest of this season until he can be dealt away over the summer).
