It's getting awful close to training camp time for our beloved NHL teams and there are still teams clamoring to get the guys they need for the latest run at the cup.
For your respective favorite team, what would you do to bolster your chances? What free-agent would you sign, or who would you trade for?
If you are supposing a trade, try to make it realistic. For example, don't tell me you'd trade Alexandre Daigle for Sidney Crosby.
In terms of my favorite team, the name of the game is defense. Hedican and Wesley have really put the 'Canes in a tough spot, combining for around $4 million. Even though the 'Canes have about $5 million in cap space, their budget is $44 million, which they are already over.
I wouldn't want to trade away any of the key forwards, the identity of the Hurricanes.
If I was the GM, I would try my best to convince Wallin to waive his no trade clause and package him with Trevor Letowski to a team that needs a solid second pair D-Man and a 3rd or 4th line RW. In exchange I'd try to get decent prospects or 2nd or 3rd round picks in a future draft.
That should free up the cap space to sign UFA Brent Sopel. He is a proven solid D-Man who has shown an offensive upside when the system allows for it. He would help bolster the defense and add the offensive spark from the blueline the 'Canes so desire.
What would you do with your favorite team?
I'd trade Rhett Warrener as soon as possible and free up cap space. I still think we need a little secondary scoring, we're solitified in the back end, and well we got Kiprusoff =p
If Svatos plays well next year, we could trade him for a solid, young defenseman like Coliacovo. I'd like such a trade.
id love to see the pick up of a guy like Ville Nimenin
