Finally, the first real sign that Flyers hockey is returning has arrived.

The Philadelphia Flyers rookie prospects have congregated at the Virtua Health Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J. for a mini-camp that is scheduled to stretch until Wednesday.

The Flyers rookie squad will take on a group of rookie prospects from the Washington Capitals on Wednesday at 4pm at the Skate Zone. Admission is free, and all on-ice sessions are open to the public.

The two rookie participants that are expected to draw the most attention are defenseman Ryan Parent (who was acquired from the Nashville Predators as part of the Peter Forsberg trade), and right winger/center Steve Downie. Both were high first round draft picks and are considered to be the two rookies with the best chance of cracking the Flyers lineup.

However, it is largely believed that Downie will be sent to the Phantoms and will be available for callups when needed.

Parent, on the other hand, may already have the inside track for a full time job with the Flyers. Defensemen Randy Jones and Alexandre Picard have spent time with the Flyers and “paid their dues”, but the natural talent level and projection of Parent as a future top pairing defenseman may be too hard to suppress.

Claude Giroux, who recently made a big splash with Team Canada in their 6-0 rout of Russia in the Super Series, will also be watched closely. Giroux was a force throughout the 8-game series, and provided two goals and an assist in Team Canada’s series-clinching Game 5 win.

However, barring an incredible training camp performance, Giroux will likely be sent back to his Juniors team for another year of development, largely due to the current logjam at the forward positions.

The rookie camp will be quickly followed by the official opening of Flyers hockey for this year, the main training camp. Friday is the day of player arrivals, while physicals will be conducted on Saturday. The preseason schedule begins on the 17th, with a contest against the New Jersey Devils at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J.

The Flyers will be officially unveiling their new RBK Edge jerseys on the 14th (the date was just changed from the 16th accourding to the Flyers website), despite the rather widespread leaks of their design on this and many other internet sites. So, we can expect them to be sporting their new digs in their first preseason game the 17th.
