A New Generation

September 11th, 2001. 7am PST. Phone rings. Wife says "OH my god! OH my god!". She turns to me and says "Planes have hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon!"
In disbelief I jump out of bed, go to the TV and sit in horror and sadness as I realize what I have just witnessed. My sister-in-law lived in New York on that day, was walking down the street, saw the 2nd plane hit the tower... Nothing mattered that day but making sure that my family, friends, loved ones and even people I barely knew were safe. What could I do from Los Angeles for those who were in the middle of the most tragic loss of life that has occurred on American soil since the Civil War in 1865. What could I do? I could be an American, a human being and friend to those around me.
That day, those moments changed me as I sat on the couch with my then 10 month old baby girl. I was saddened to know that my little girl would never again see the world that I grew up with. I was saddened to know that I would never know that world again either. I remember looking at my wife with tears in my eyes saying that the world will never ever be the same. The innocence of the American people and the American public is gone. An innocence we all took for granted.
I would like to honor those that serve our country, those that have served our country and those that are yet to serve. Firefighters, Police, Marines, Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and all of our citizens that come to the aid of others, regular people like you and I. They all have families, they all have lives that they risk to ensure the safety of those they do not know, those they do not see, and those that need them. They ask for nothing in return for their duty besides the minimal pay that they receive, but most of these amazingly willing and heroic people would do exactly what they do now for nothing. These are the people that we need to look up to and thank, so the next time you see a Fireman, a Cop, or a Military uniform, take one minute to say, "Thank You". I do. I teach my kids to do the same. These people don't get that often enough, they deserve it. Don't just take this day to remember these people and their sacrifices. 9/11 was a tragic and horrific event that is unconscionable to think about happening again. Remember that Firefighters, Police and Military personnel work 365 days a year protecting us, helping us.

Well said G16. Adding my thanks again to all those who so ably serve and sacrifice.
I've supported the war efforts, and the brave men and women who have served, including my father...thank you for everything you've done. I feel safe in Canada, and wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks for those who have protected us, in all generations. I'm happy I live in a country that believes in freedom, and will protect ourselves to keep it that way. Bless all those who lost their lives on that tragic day, you will never be forgotten.
