Nonsens going a long way here...

Just read something interesting on TSN.com in the Article about Dead McAmmond talking to TSN. (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/new...9333&hubname=nhl)
Are you kidding me? That would be a 4 year suspension for a hit that was nearly by the rules the NHL set. There is no single rule in this league that would allow such a punishment. What has Todd Bertuzzi gotten for his Sucker Punch on Steve Moore, while breaking his neck with complete intent to injure and undoubtly ending Steve Moores hockey career and pretty much the life he had before. Downeys hit was NOWHERE near such thing. 25 Games for Chris Simon for a hockeystick to the face which is by no means is within the rules. Since when is checking forbidden? Sure, it was not a normal check but since the only real point about a suspension is that it MAY have been a Headshot and Downey MAY have left the ice before the hit. Where are we going? Next time someone is hit in the face by a puck you tell me you want the shooter suspended a for life because he COULD have WANTED to KILL the opposing player?
This is ridiculous and such statements by officials are showing me how pathetic this whole discussion has become in the last days. Sure, the league has to punish such incidents and perhaps even harder than they did before (see my other blogpost for this), but by no means the punishment should be going through the roof like this. I can only hope the NHL Officials don't listen to such idiotic and absolutely unrealistic statements. Where would we be if the victims decide whats the right punishment? I'm really shocked what i heard the last days from within the Senators organization.
I mean - there was a time when i thought this would be a classy organization with good people around.
First the threat Sens goon McGrattan throws out on public that he wants to end Downeys career the next time they meet on the ice?
Then a absolutely ridiculous punishment is requested by Senators Headcoach?
Whats next? A lawsuit against the Flyers because they put Downey on the ice?
It's such a horrible request, I start to doubt it was really meant that way.
Or do the Sens and their Headcoach really fear Downey and the Flyers that much that they want him to be out 'til his contract expires and he's nearly a UFA?

"I think for the good of Steve Downie. He needs to be suspended for a long time. We were cheering for him the last two christmas times (World Junior Championships) and he was a big factor. We we're cheering his clean hits and we wouldn't be cheering for something like that.
"I think this kid is the kind of player every team in the league wants, but you have to have control. To me for him to be in the NHL when he is 24-years-old, I think the league takes probably the most important thing in his life away from him for a while," Paddock said.
"I think he is a young guy who unfortunatley we all know his history in the OHL and stuff probably hockey is the most important, take it away from him, so hopefully he remembers, I think it would be the best thing for him so he can be playing in the league when he is 24 years old."

Get your facts straight. It's really easy to interpret what Paddock mean. If Downie wants to be in the NHL at 24, the NHL has to give him a meaningful suspension so he doesn't run around like a little runaway train. It wasn't hard to interpret and it's been on several hockey boards. And...the Sens being afraid of Downie...hmmm....I'm thinking it may be the other way around at the moment.
And the NHL issued a instructional video to all the teams, stating the four things you could get suspended for in a high hit. Downie fell under ALL the criteria.

Why is it that all NHL analysts, coaches AND players are all saying this goon should be suspended a long time for what he did. But Flyers fans come out and start calling the Sens and their fans babies? Am I missing something here? Steve Downie was suspended 8 times in OHL and his coach recommended counseling for this psycho. Then, after taking a clean hit from Schubert, he then skates full stride from center ice looking to rip someone's head off...and this is ok?? And Feinbild, if Paddock was somehow the Sens coach and the commish, do you actually think he'd suspend him for 4 years? He just said that he thought he's be NHL ready at 24, maybe after he's done counseling, grows up and learns to respect other players...because right now all he is is a punk.
Facts, Feindbild, facts. Steve Moore isn't playing hockey yet (if he ever will) NOT because of the broken bones in his neck, but because of the concussion he received. Isn't that what McCammond has? A concussion. It's the second concussion for him in a few months. Downie's penalty was for INTENT TO INJURE which is against the rules -- 5 minutes and a game plus automatic review for further suspension.
AS a Flyers fan, let me say that what Downie did was absolutely and without question wrong!!! Was it the worst hit or cheap shot in NHL history, of course not, but that doesn't change the fact that this kid needs to be suspended and really needs to learn to control himself if he wants an NHL career. IMO a 10 game suspension sounds about right. On the other hand, McGrattan was quoted in the Philadelphia Inquirer saying that he Downie would "get what was coming to him". Thats fine, however should McGrattan take a similar run at Downie or any other Flyer player, he would be just as deserving of a suspension as Downie.
