And so comes the end of another Leaf game.......another Leaf game that the blew in the third period. It's getting to the point where you don't have to watch anymore as you know whats going to happen. The Leafs start the game by getting out played and having the goalie whoever it might be on the given night, followed by the Leafs grabbing a one or two goal lead heading to the third, and then the collapse! This team is unable to hold on to third period leads, and if things keep up it's going to cost them a playoff apperence once again....(see last season)
Last year it seemed to be for the most part on Andrew Raycroft's shoulders, but this year there seems to be a bigger problem. The Leafs defence is brutal! As if watching Saturdays game against Pittsburgh wasn't bad enough tonight the Leafs had a 2-0 lead going into the third and lost the game in overtime 5-4. The Penguins were able to skate circles around the Leaf defense that ended up giving up a 3-1 lead. Tonight we saw much of the same. The Sabres were able to take advantage of Leaf penalties, and a defense that seemed lost at times to over come a 2-0 deficit. Hal Gill looked like a statue most of the night, Pavel Kubina the the Sabres up with perfect passes on a couple of occasions and Bryan McCabe after missing his own net at the end of the third to score the game winner for Buffalo, came through for the Sabres in overtime putting his shot off both posts and behind the goal line for a 5-4 Buffalo win.
At this point in time I'm not sure what can be done. Kubina, McCabe and Gill make too much to be traded......Not that there would be a lot of demand anyway, and they make way to much to just send to the minors. The sad reality of the situation is the Leafs are stuck with these guys and unless things change/improve and soon there will be three springs with no playoff hockey in Toronto.
only mccabe from that list has a no movement clause - if the leafs were serious about improving, they would move kubina and gill - and if there are no takers - there is nothing wrong with sending them to the minors to get the off the books. If New Jersey can do it to Mogilny, the Leafs can do it to Kubina and Gill
