The Toronto Maple Leafs looked to rebound after their 6-4 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks Saturday night. Mats sundin scored 13 seconds into the game which may have been an indication that the leafs were here to make a statement. I was wrong. The leafs were down 2-1 at the end of first which didn't seem so bad, unless you remember that their number 1 goalie is out with an injury.
The second period began just as the first had begun. A quick goal by the leafs (1:12 by Hal Gill). Alexei Ponikarovsky missed a wide open net which was later followed by a penalty call to Ponikarovsky. The powerplay for the Thrashers went 0-5 but had scored just as Ponikarovsky stepped out of the box.
Entering the 3rd period the score was tied 3-3. Todd White scored at 13:02 which looked to be the game winning goal as time wound down. Alexei Ponikarovsky redeemed himself scoring with 10 seconds remaining sending the game into OT where nobody would score. Paul Maurice once again went with his "hot hand" and sent Antropov out for the shooutout first. It worked as he was the lone scorer for the leafs. Kovalchuk ended our night by scoring on the newly-acquired netminder as the Thrashers celebrated only their 2nd victory (2-7-0).
The Leafs who are off until Thursday night when they visit Sidney Crosby and the Pens. The Leafs who are 0-1-1 on the road open a 2 game away trip Thursday and Saturday (pens, rangers). Either the Leafs start winning some games or there will be some changes either in the front office or behind the bench. JFJ's future depends on this season's outcome, only time will tell if the Leafs have what it takes to be a playoff team let alone a Stanley cup contender.
Just when you think things couldn't get any worse. Keep your head up. When you hit bottom the only way to go is up.
The Leafs and the Thrashers arent as bad as everyone thinks. The Thrashers are a REALLY good team - they just quit on their coach early and were trying to get him fired - since then, they have been dangerous since firing their coach and will countinue to be
That coach they fired was a joke. Good thing they didn't wait any longer.
