Erik Johnson will be introduced at a press confrence today as the Blues have lured the first overall pick away from spending another year at the University of Minnesota.
The signing of Johnson means a Blues d-man will
HAVE to be moved.
On D the Blues have
Johnson
McKee
Brewer
Jackman
Backman
Salvador
Polak
Woywika
Walker
The most logical move would be to move Backman, who makes 2.3 milliom next season. While he is a promising young player, there is no room for him and Blues fans became frusterated with his lack of physicallity last year.
If the Blues want to be serious contenders for a high name free agent, they have to clear some cap space, and moving Backman's hefty salary would help.
Andy Murrary was impressed with Woywika last year. Jeff was brought over in the Pronger deal and is ready to be a top-6 defenseman in the NHL. Polak has shown great potential and deserves a shot, but I see him starting the year in Peoria.
Johnson was drafted by the Blues in the sixth round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He played his first professional season with the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2013-14.
