I made this comment recently in response to someone saying that the Rangers are at the top of the list.
Look at logically:
As of right now the Rangers have less than a million in cap space left. Lets assume Sundin is commanding at least 7 milliion on the market to go to a 'contender'. That's a fair number since it is reportedly the same as Montreal's offer. Well the Rangers would have to clear 7 million in cap space to accommodate him. How would they do that? With
MASSIVE difficulty.
Some people have mentioned the possibility of moving Drury or Gomez. First of all, the Rangers aren't going to move 2 great players who they have locked up for 4 and 6 more years respectively in order to take a gamble on a player (even Sundin) for a year or 2. Secondly, trading Drury or Gomez would not be enough even though they have 7 million dollar contracts. You can't trade away 7 million of salary and not get anything back. They would probably get (just a guess) at least 2 million and maybe as much as 4 or 5 million back which means they would have to move 1 or 2 more well paid players. Sather isn't going to dismantle this team in order to bring in Sundin.
Oh yeah Redden is another player who has a big salary but honestly, who is going to take that cap hit?
NO ONE. The acquisition of Sundin by the Rangers is
barely plausible let alone practical.
I agree. I have no idea why this talk of Mats to the NYR won't go away. It makes zero sense to me. This has been an insane offseason for this team.
Drury and Gomez have NTC in their deals.
Well Gomez just has a 3 team list he wont accept a trade to, other than those teams, he can be traded
I'm thinking Mats # 13 will be hanging in Gerry Cosby's window in just a few weeks. This time the jersey will have a little red to go with the Blue and White.
