I look forward to the first regular season Leaf game each year and last night was no different. As I sat watching the Stanley Cup banner raised to the rafters, the chills went up my spine. The crowd was wild with enthusiasm for their hometown Wings, and everyone had "blowout" on their minds. The Leafs had other ideas.
Building upon the positive signs they showed during the preseason, the Leafs played like the real champions last night and outclassed the Red Wings in all aspects of the game. Goaltending, forward speed, defensive awareness, it all came together on a magical night to start the season.
After the game all the right things were being said by coaches and players like. It's just one game, don't read too much into it, there is a lot of work still to be done. But secretly many players acknowledged to me they were real pleased with how things have progressed under new coach Ron Wilson. There is an excitement in the Leaf dressing room which hasn't been seen in at least over a decade.
Carlo Colaiacovo shook my hand soon after the game had ended, winked and said "that's one", as if to signify that is one win in MANY more to come this season.
There is a palpable sense of hope from all the Leafs I spoke with after the game. Newcomers Grabovski, Hagman and game winning goal Kulemin all spoke of how eager they are to prove themselves in the tough hockey market that is Toronto.
Leaf fans, you ain't seen nothing yet.
