Here are the NHL's top rookies sorted by number of points....
Chris Versteeg(CHI)- 15 goals, 26 assists, and 41 points in 49 games played
Bobby Ryan(ANH)- 18 goals, 17 assists, and 35 points in only 39 games played
Patrik Berglund(STL)- 16 goals 19 assists, and 35 points in 49 games played
Blake Wheeler(BOS)- 15 goals, 18 assists, and 33 points in 55 games played
So which one of these forwards will win the Calder? Possibly none of them when you consider what Columbus goalie Steve Mason has done.
Steve Mason(CBJ)- 19-12-2, 2.09 GAA (leads league), .923 save percentage, and 7 shutouts (leads league)
The race is wide open at this point but I would think that Berglund and Wheeler would each have to put up some big numbers to finish the season in order to stand a chance. Versteeg and Ryan are pretty evenly matched considering their amount of games played.
However, the numbers that Mason is putting up for an under talented Columbus team makes him my front runner at this point.
Mason wins the Calder hands down but if I had my choice of forwards - I'll take Berglund every time, no questions asked. He's going to be an absolute star in this league.
If Berglund can pick up his play and start putting the puck in the net again, he has a chance. But if Mason keeps playing like he has, he'll win it. We'd need him to go AWOL for a chance for Bergie to win it.
