IF the rumors are true (espn and the hockey news both say so) The Kolvy Devils deal has been denied by the NHL.

Really now? The NHL, who is still, according to reports, investigating how many licks it takes to get to the center of the CBA, is going to deny this contract. 17 years = too long. 15 Years is ok. Before people start to say, look at the age, I would like to point out the following: As far as I am concerned, the NHL age limit isn’t set. It just seems wrong to me to limit this contract, now at least. When this loop hole first came up, they should have said you can only sign players for x- amount of years. And they didn’t. Why start now? Here are the reasons I think they NHL should allow this stars contract to go through:
•It’s unfair to pick on NJ. They don’t need it, see: there playoff success since the CBA was introduced. The CBA owes the Devils a favor since killing their ability to play playoff hockey.
•Does the NHL not know that the KHL will play Kolv a lot more money for a lot less years?
•Were the Coyotes in the mix for the Kolv race?
•Seriously, Did the NHL owned Coyotes want to shell out 102 million for 17 years? That should help keep the ice cold in Phoenix… oh wait, they just sold the air conditioner to the Colorado for a bus to take the team to all the games next season.
Now, to attack this denial on a few fronts: Age, Money, Other CBA violations. Age: please, go to (http://www.quanthockey.com/TS/TS_AverageAge.php) . The Average age for a player is between 27.9ish and 30ish. So, according to stats, any contract that signs a player over that, should not be allowed. See: just about every contract that isn’t for a rookie. Also with age is, Retirement.
Using the same website and clicking on retirement, you see that the MIN age for retirement is by Len Wharton, at 17 years of age. The Max, is Gordie Howe. So… make that the Max for a contract, right? No one is going to beat that. The Average age is almost 28 years of age. 28!! Any contract over 28 then, should be considered against the “spirit of the CBA.” See: Just about every contract that isn’t for a rookie, again. Then, please, go get a drink, and come back!
As a Flyers fan, It hurts to say it… but … I think Pronger’s Contract might be designed to lower his cap number, and he might not be playing after 2014-2015 (When his pay drops from 4,000,000 to 425,000 or, from 76,923 dollars per week to 8173 dollars per week) . So, I think the League should make him a free agent, replay the whole season and playoffs, and re-do the draft. Oh, you mean they approved that contract? Oh.
A final note: do not get me wrong. I want the CBA to work, correctly. But, I don’t want the league to suddenly give a poop about contract signings. Does Koly’s contract seem to break the rules. DUH! I can’t think for one second a star like himself went, oh, at some point I will be worthless, just pay me as little as possible to lower the cap number for yourselves. At the same time, I think the enforcement of this CBA is too little, too late. Correct me if I am wrong, because I am wrong sometimes, but isn’t the CBA up soon? There are 13 teams that could have given Kolvy a 1 year, 10 million dollar contract. (From what I see from the cap-central from the hockey buzz.) However, that doesn’t mean that any of those other teams wanted him at that price or for that many years. I hope the player’s union wins this case, and that Kolvy ends up playing for NJ. I also hope that he and the Devils have 17 years of first round exits at the hands of the Flyers
