A Flyers Miracle

Eddie Cahill was in the stands tonight at the Flyers game, sitting 2nd row behind the benches. For those of you not familiar with Cahill, you might recognize him as Detective Flack from CSI: NY, Rachel's one-time boyfriend on Friends, or my bet would be you know him as Jim Craig from one of the best sports films of all time, Miracle.

I was able to sit next to Eddie during warm-ups, and my father and I talked with him throughout about our common passion of hockey. Eddie said he's a life-long Rangers fan (I know, I still talked to him anyways...) and he seemed to have the excitement of a little kid because he was sitting 2nd row. A kid on the other side of me was thrown a puck and Eddie joked that he was going to steal it from him. We also joked about Avery yapping at a few guys down the row from us - as Avery does every time he comes into Philly. Eddie was a great guy, very down to earth, and indulged us for the better part of a half hour.

It was fitting that Eddie was there, as a Miracle was necessary for the Flyers to win this game tonight against the Rangers. Off of Mike Richards breakaway goal, the Flyers carried a 1-0 lead throughout most of the game before making it 2-0 on Briere's 27 goal of the season. The Rangers quickly tied it up on goals by Malik and Dawes. Less then 3 minutes later, Briere nets his 28th of the season and 2nd of the night to put the Flyers back up 3-2. But with 1:51 left, the Flyers give up the lead yet again due to lackluster defense - allowing Jagr to score to send the game to overtime.

The score remained tied and many Flyers' fans feared what was next - the shootout. The Flyers have been horrible in the shootout since it's implementation after the lockout including 1-5 this year. However, Richards and Carter netted the Flyers' first and only 2 shots as the Flyers went on to gain a much needed 2 points in the standings on a night where Washington gained some ground and Buffalo lost some.

The Flyers now jumped in front of Boston to take over the 7th seed by 1 point (Boston has a game in-hand) and have a 2 point cushion over 9th-seeded Washington.
