Who is Jesse Joensuu?

I have become fascinated with the Islanders former second round pick and one of the newest members of the Edmonton Oilers. 'The Hockey News' website always offers great talent analysis on players, what is communicated to us Oilers fans should excite us, at least it excited me

Assets: Has great size and some scoring ability. Is aggressive on the forecheck. Can play either wing position effectively. Also has a little two-way upside.
Flaws: Needs to shoot the puck more in order to become more productive and consistent on offense. Must also improve his consistency on defense, too.
Career Potential: Two-way winger with a little upside.

Have we stumbled across the third line workhorse we’ve been looking for here?!

Joensuu is 25 years old and is listed as 6’4”, 209 lbs. The combination of Joensuu’s size and his aggressive nature on the forecheck immediately get my wheels turning. Here’s a forward that we should get excited about, here’s a forward that has the ability to turn the momentum of a shift, even a game with a big hit. rnFrom the clips I was able to check out on Youtube I came away with the following:rn Joensuu has a heavy wrist shot, if he gets 3-5 of these shots on net a game the goals will come for him. Joensuu is willing to drop the gloves to defend his teammates, he is an industrious winger that seems to like to work in the dirty areas and hit players on the opposing team incredibly hard. rnThere must be some catch, why would the Islanders have just let this guy walk? Let’s have a look at his stats.rnAHL rnGP G A PTS +/- PIMrn177 42 69 111 25 155rn rnNHL rnGP G A PTS +/- PIMrn67 8 7 15 -1 47rnrnThere is a no way to sugar coat the numbers. Joensuu’s offence has been lacking in the NHL. But what we do not know is how he will respond on a new team with a new role and a new coach. I don’t think it would be a stretch to expect 20-30 points out of Jonesuu playing 12 – 15 minutes a night, if he is throwing big hits, working the corners, jamming the front of the net on the second unit power play and generally playing his style of game his point total will not be near indicative of his value to the team. rnJesse Jonesuu is in every way a gamble. We really do not know what to expect out of him but there is plenty to be excited about. At the very least he will be an upgrade over Teemu Hartaikanen at the very best we have found a young power forward needing an opportunity to come in to his own. I cannot wait for Jesse Jonesuu to show us all what he’s about on the ice opening night!rnrnThank You for reading. I appreciate all comments.rn
