Everyone keeps speculating that Ryan O'reilly will be moved at the trade deadline, due to his contract debacle and offer sheet snafu of last season. However, I don't agree. The old management is gone (who caused that contract debacle in the first place), so there old ways of doing business should be gone too (trading players when they hold out for more money, or make a counteroffer.) With Super Joe Sakic, and St. Patrick Roy in charge, I expect to see a much greater importance put on work ethic, character, and players who play with heart. In my opinion Ryan O'reilly fits the bill perfectly! No one works harder, on or off the ice. No body on the Avs plays with more heart or passion. With a fresh start with a new coach, Ryan O'reilly is going to be a super star for the Avalanche organization. On the other hand, Paul Stastny got a big contract, and has declined every single season since signing it. Stastny constantly underperforms, and never shows up for the big moments or the big games. That's not a good example for these young Avalanche players to follow. The number one concern for the Avalanche this season is to sure up its defense. Trading Paul Stastny for a proven top 2 defenseman makes perfect since. Stastny alone may not be enough to get such a player, but he needs to be the major part of the package. Stastny's contract is up after this season, so the Avs should trade him for a D man, before he walks for nothing. Trading Stastny will leave the Avs with a young core of elite centers consisting of Duchene, O'reilly, and Mackinnon! That is a truly strong line-up down the middle. With a key new addition to the Defense, and a healthy Ryan Wilson returning, the goal-tending will improve as well. I think Semyon Varlamov is as athletic of a goalie as there is in the entire league. He is extremely fast, flexible, and talented. Once the Avs get a proper defense and defensive system playing in front of him, I think the fans will be shocked on just how good of a goalie he really is. All of this can come true, if the Avs just make that key trade for a Defensman by shipping Stastny out of Colorado!
