Lowe Fires Back

Posted 8:13 PM ET | Comments 24
Update: Saturday 07/05/08 --- you can find the interview here: http://www.justagame.ca/a...0Interview%20July%204.mp3

On local radio in Edmonton this afternoon, Kevin Lowe was interviewed and finally fired back at Brian Burke. The interviewer asked K-Lowe what his thoughts were, on Burke's latest whining over high salaries (Corey Perry) and how Burke Blames Kevin, based on the offer sheets last year.

Kevin finally had had enough. He proceeded to call Burke a "Moron" and continued to chastise him for leaving the Vancouver Canucks in disarray at the end of his tenure there. He went on to call out the "pathetic hockey market" that Burke has to deal with. And challenged Burke to a debate regarding salaries increasing over the last couple of decades and not because of the offers Kevin made last year.

Personally, I respected Kevin's ability to take the high road when Brian Burke was publicly assaulting him in the media last year. I always wondered if Kevin would fire back. Well... today he did in spades!!! I'm sure in a few hours this interview will be all over the internet, unfortunately I doubt it has gotten out yet. if you get a chance to Google this later it is well worth the 28 minutes.

As an Oiler fan, I'm glad that Brian finally got what was coming to him.

too little too late, it is quite obvious that Burke has pwned Lowe and Lowe is just sick of being humiliated by a superior mind

As MacT said, listening to Burke is like trying to get a drink of water out of a fire hose. Burke is still P.O. at Lowe and it shows by his simpleton type remarks. He can't help himself, the local papers won't print any thing about him so he goes public on venues that will quote him, no matter how ridiculous and dumb those quotes may be

Burke?... A superior mind?... Are you kidding me?

burke is the most overrated gm there is. he was basically given the championship team and the ducks have been in a tailspin ever since. lowe is right, the ducks don't have much to look forward too. by contrast, the oilers are a team on the rise, and much of the credit goes to lowe. in three years, the oilers will be straight up scary, and they will be mopping the floor with the ducks.

im sick of brian burke
July 5, 2008 4:17 AM ET | Delete
Yeah, but exactly how did Burke lure niedermayer to the ducks? That's what I want to know.
July 5, 2008 7:12 AM ET | Delete
Burke lured Niedermayer by saying, I'll pay you as much cash as anyone else, and you can play with your brother.

Enough out of Brian Burke's ugly gate already. I would like to know if he realizes how stupid he sounds. He's the joke of the media. I'm a flames fan and I would even say KLowe is twice the GM as Burke. Can't wait to see Burke drive the Maple Leafs further in the ground. Hey BURKE, you want to see a team that over pays thier players. Just look at the roster of your future team.

I had serious doubts about Lowe before this off season, it seemed like he kept getting the short end of trades, players leaving, players going back on contracts ect. I have to say though, the oilers look exceptional going into this season, maybe need to up their d a little bit, but he's done a good Job. I agree with most of what Lowe said but I took exception to his reply on the Penner offer sheet. He overpaid, plain and simple, he compared Penner to Nash, iilya and the like...no way!! I think Penner is a good player but a 30 goal guy isn't a 50 goal guy. Aside from that Lowe was bang on.

"Force" too little too late, it is quite obvious that Burke has pwned Lowe and Lowe is just sick of being humiliated by a superior mindSuperior mind? that's why burke signed bertuzzi and let penner hang out there for lowe to scoop up. then he buys out bertuzzi because as everyone else knew, he's not the player he used to be. i'm no GM but i could see that bertuzzi is not worth $4 million a season. burke should've been thanking kevin for his cup when kevin didn't have to trade pronger to anaheim

The Oilers are a team on the rise...with what??an old goalie and some forwards who can't score anymore?
July 5, 2008 2:58 PM ET | Delete
old goalie? Garon isn't old. and Rolosons contract is up next year that will give us another 3 million for forwards. our depth chart is looking really good at forward and at defense what with the stud Taylor Chorney getting his irst entry level contract this week. and Deslaurier is definitely coming along nicely in net and don't be surprised to see him play this year. not to mention, all the comments from K-Lowe and Laraque and MacT not to mention Rich Winter, indicate that Edmonton will be very much in the running to sign Hossa next year. also we have a billionaire owner willing to spend to the cap and build a new rink and world class training faciliites. so...how are we not up and coming???
July 5, 2008 3:03 PM ET | Delete
Hey Jsaq, that was my thinking - but Lowe sounded so cryptic in his interview about the Niedermayer signing - but you're prob right, just a case that he Burke has no fear of paying big contracts when he wants too...

Memo to Dwight K. Schrute, bears eat beats. Bears, beats, Battlestar Galactica. If you think the Oilers have forwards who can't score anymore, you should look at the team a little more in depth. They have close to zero players who can't score anymore, they have a plethora of players who are learning to score. The average age of the Oilers is 27.7 years, with only the Coyotes being lower. They have up and coming players who had breakout and breakthrough seasons last year: Gagner, Cogliano, Nilsson, Brodziak. Furthermore, Horcoff, being 30, was a point per game player until his shoulder tore. So perhaps you should do a bit more research before you start cutting down the entire team.

I lost any respect I had for Lowe when I read that interview. He didn't just fire shots at Burke, he insulted an entire fanbase and he was wrong to do so. Not just because it's a lack of class, but because he was entirely wrong. If he'd bothered to pick up a copy of the OC Register or the LA Times during the Ducks' run to the Stanley Cup he would have known that. Lowe's doing a good job of rebuilding the Oilers. He should just take the high road and let his team do the talking instead.

Before any more "hockey experts" choose to run there mouths and lash out at K Lowe's most recent actions... just remember that this man has played the game, coached the game, managed the game and most importantly lived the game. He has six Stanley Cup rings for crying out loud... and I think he is more then entitiled to call things as he see's them. Burke should have realized by now that if your going to keep poking the bear... you're going to get mauled.
July 5, 2008 7:55 PM ET | Delete
It's like Avery attacking Gretzky... A pitiful attempt. Lowe has not created a team that won a Cup, nor was he a significant part of his rings... If the Oilers or Rangers didn't have him, do you not think they would have won anyways? Without Pronger and Neidermeyer, I doubt the Ducks could have won the Cup. Lowe is at fault for the salary increases, and it's gonna end up biting the Oilers at the end of the day.

For any player to have been a part of 6 championship teams (as part of two different franchises no less) and not be considered an integral parts of those victories is absolutely ridiculous! Must have been dumb luck the hoisted the cup over his head 6 times in 10 years. As far as salaries go... well, this debate has been hashed and re-hashed over and over again. Yet the same indisputable economic law still prevails... supply and demand. A player is only worth as much as a team/owner is willing to pay for his services. As long as a cap is in place... the metaphorical pie is indeed finite and as such cannot grow... if player salaries increase to much, economics will act in accordance with these laws and equilibrium will be acheived.KLowe cannot and should not be held responsible for the contracts that other teams tender... no ones cirle of influence is that great!
July 5, 2008 8:33 PM ET | Delete
really how are the rise in contract numbers lowe's fault? the only reason he went the offer sheet route was because he could not get any of the big name ufas to sign for a rebuilding team. smyth, drury, gomez and briere all signed monster contracts, and i am sure lowe wanted to get his hands on one of them at the time. so instead he needed to make offer sheets large enough to make sure the other team may not sign. he would have been dumb to try to sign penner to modest (or secondary contract) because burke would have just matched. a good gm uses all tools possible to make the team better. burke needs to quit being a baby. in fact, he might want to look at sending some offer sheets because his team isn't exactly a powerhouse anymore...

Diet.. thank you for the office reference..awesome...however I disagree with anyone who banks on a bunch of young guys to blossom. Plus Garon is not and probably never will be a great goalie who is able to lead a team to the cup. Horcoff is good but with a bunch of kids around him you seriously need to luck out that even one of them will be great. If that is the case, the Sabres will be hoisting Stanley Cups for years with the likes of Gerbe,Kennedy, Hunter and Enroth in goal. So many teams are better now and in the future that the Oilers, like my team the Sabres are so far behind right now that it will take a huge miracle for them to overtake these teams. I wish both sides luck but the Detroits and Penguins are still stocked with good young talent to go with the great veteran talent they have.

goleafsgo93:"Lowe is at fault for the salary increases"Is probably one of the dumbest comments I've ever read on this site (and that's saying something)
July 6, 2008 7:29 PM ET | Delete
All i have to say is Burke started all this along time ago and K Lowe kept his mouth shut for longer than i woulda. And it is true he became Gm with a team set up to win.The Ducks are not lookin so good anymore and he also overpays too(Bertuzzi,Perry and Giguere
July 6, 2008 9:26 PM ET | Delete
The thing with Penner, or any RFAs, is teams have to overpay for the good ones. If they don't the teams will easily match it. You have to over pay for RFAs if you want them to sign with your team.
