West vs. East

Posted 3:16 PM ET | Comments 7
Current records for West vs. East:

West: 123-72-21

East: 93-100-23

To me, these numbers clearly show that the West is still dominate in the NHL. There have been talks of the torch being passed over to the East, but it appears that is not happening yet atleast. The Top 3 East teams have a combined 21-19-2 vs. the West. The Top 3 West teams have a combined 28-7-5 against the East. Granted, there are more games to be played but those numbers to me are quite eye popping.

What are the opinions of why the West seems to be much better than the East? Coaching? Players? Better run front offices? Is there a different attitude in the West that gives them the edge? I would like to hear opinions of why this might be occuring.

I think part of it is conditioning/fatigue of the players. Teams in the West are more conditioned to travel, unlike many of the Eastern teams that have road games a "bus ride" away and then can be back at home resting before the next game. When the East goes to play the West, it is a situation more demanding than the typical Eastern travel schedule. I have no evidence to back this up, just my theory.

Interesting theory from Torque, especially since we hear complaints from various sources about the disadvantages to West Conf teams about the lengthy travel. Your theory makes some sense however. Sort of a reverse effect of what one might expect. Also, this season's schedule was harder on the East in that they have not had as many of these long-distance trips as the West in the recent past seasons and are therefore not as conditioned to them.

Then again, I'll just add a biased comment: at this point the West is simply a better conference overall for whatever reasons.

Having teams like NYI and typically the entirely SE will never help in this scenario.

well that is a good point but it could go both ways saying overall the east is not as goo cause the top teams records are heaily inflated where as in the west all the teams are a hard game night in and night out

the west again is much stronger. bigger, tougher, deeper, way better defensively,,its really not even that close.to that other guy mentioning travel schedules...im not sure i fully understand.so because the west i used to travelling more, the new more EVEN travel schedule hampers the east because they are used to such insanely better travel schedule for years??sure i guess...the difference between miles travelled has been much bigger years in years past and the west still dominated.its just simply better.
