The Philadelphia Flyers were unable to sign Jaromir Jagr by July 1st due to obvious differences. The Flyers are putting their eggs in the Zach Parise/Ryan Suter baskets. I'm not saying the Flyers would have signed Jagr if they weren't in this limbo, he was unhappy with playing time and wanted more money than last year, but they would have certainly given more attention to him and other forwards.

Jagr's signing should be a warning to the Flyers. With his departure and JVR's trade for Luke Schenn, you are looking at a net absence of 56 points. While they would be about middle-of-the-pack in Goals For, there would be an obvious drop that would require the defense and Ilya Bryzgalov to perform better. (They should regardless but that's another point.) While fans like myself appreciate the team would go sign elite players to put the team over the top, the likelihood of either coming to Philadelphia appears to be slim. The Flyers need to bring in other free agents to replace the scoring, and resign Matt Carle. He is the best remotely attainable defender on the market for the Flyers. I know that Carle's agent wants Suter to sign first so his client can get a big payday but why can't the Flyers just give him $5-6 million? He may not be worth that money in actuality but considering the Flyers are willing to throw $100MM contracts to two different players says that their price is inelastic considering their talent. Matt Carle is an essential part of the team. Get him for as cheap as possible but they should not be afraid to spend the money necessary to bring him back.

Here is what the Flyers should do besides resign Matt Carle:

Move Danny Briere to the top right winger. Let him work with Giroux and Hartnell while he still has the talent. Him and Hartnell have had a chemistry on lines together before, and Giroux can help bring Briere back to the All-Star game if they're on the same line.

Brayden Schenn becomes the No. 2 Center, Couturier No. 3 or 4. This means you bring in a No. 3 or 4 center, say, maybe Jason Arnott, Dominic Moore, or Brendan Morrison.

Resign Voracek, obviously.

Push for Shane Doan and/or Mike Knuble, although I doubt Doan comes to Philly.

With Pronger's LTIR, you could have the room to do this. Next year you would have new free agents and have more cap space if you were to sign older, short-term guys in Jagr's place.

I would love for Parise and/or Suter to come, but that's not happening. Please Homer, don't let all the good players get away.

Briere plays 10 times better at center than he does on the wing, he struggles at the wing.

Danny was a great C in Buffalo even though he's still a traitor

Danny B can't play C anymore because he is the biggest defensive liablility on the team, not the kind of player you want being defensive. He needs to be a winger.

He plays better at center but is bad at face offs. An besides, playing wing toGiroux will certainly help his production.

Danny playing wing has been tried a lot and has not worked. He is there to score goals, not to play Defense. Let him. We can afford one defensive liability line as long as he scores more goals than he lets in.

If he is paid to score goals as you said, he made $406,250 per goal last season (16). At $6.5 million a year, he better be scoring more than 16 goals or playing better defense.
