Let's face facts Sabre Nation, the boys in the suits are not going to spend to the cap next year and it seems very possible they actually spend less then last year. That is why it is virtulally impossible to keep both Drury and Briere. That being said here is what I think the roster could look like next season. This involves letting Briere and Zubrus walk, not offering Numminen a contract and finding a way to trade Kalinin and Kotalik, say for draft picks. It also involves signing one free agnet, that being Scott Hannan from the Sharks. The cap numbers for the players are accurate except for the players in italics which had to be guesstimated.

Forwards $25M
Drury 6M
Vanek 3.5M
Afinogenov 3.33M
Connolly 2.9M
Hecht 2.2M
Roy 2.2M
Pominville 1.03M
Stafford .98M
Paille .9M
Mair .75M
Gaustad .71M
Kaleta .49M

Defensemen 14.52M
Hannan 3.5M
Spacek 3.33M
Lydman 2.88M
Tallinder 2.56M
Campbell 1.5M
Paestch .75M

Goalies 3.27M
Miller 2.67M
Conklin .6M

That equals 42.79M for those 20 playes, plus lets say they carry Peters as an extra forward for 600K, so that is a cap number of about 43.4M next year. Doable I would hope.

I would break down the lines as follows

Vanek Drury Stafford (Three very heady players would mesh well)
Pominville Connolly Afinogenov (Timmy feeding Pommer works)
Hecht Roy Paille (A decent checking line then can score)
Mair Gaustad Kaleta (I wouldn't want to play againist that line)

Tallinder Lydman
Hannan Campbell
Spacek Paestch

I think that is still a good team but still not tough enough to win the playoff battles. It's team that finishes second in its division and will end up the 4 or 5 seed in the playoffs.

There you have it. I know we probably won't sign Hannan but hey, there is a chance we try to get tougher back their and we should give it a shot.

Here is looking to next year.

- Cheers

Homer-This could work, but I think if the Sabres can keep Drury he is going to demand a vet. RWer for his line that may have cup exp. and a mean streak.I love the Scott Hannan idea, wouldn't mind Corey Sarich or Ric Jackman in that spot either.Ps: I thought Campbell is in the 2m range next year.

I'm not sure if these guys count, but if they do you need to add in the following as well:MacArthur - .625Mancari - .505Funk - .605Sekara - .658Card - .5Dennis - .515Total - 3.40843.4 3.408 = 46.08Still doable, but pushing it. I would like to see Spacek one but it won't happen. If it did we could bring in Sutton hopefully for around the same.

Aud, Campbell may make close to 2m next year but accoarding to NHLNUMBERS.com his cap number is only 1.5

The McArthurs and Mancari's of the world don't count towards your cap unless they are on the active roster, which they won't be unless injuries happen.

I too wouldn't mind bringing Sarich in, he will be a little cheaper than Hannan, which might give you an extra mil to add some grit up front as well. I just hope Spacek had a bad year, he needs to step it up next year and earn his 3 mil that he is getting.

Dont mind the roster you created though could use another veteran forward upfront. Sarich is a strong player and I may prefer him to Hannan though either would be better than what we currently have.

how bout we sacrafice connolly to help keep both briere and drury? that is only if they can find some1 to take spaceks ridiculous contract. trading spacek for lets say a draft pick would free up 3.33, sign a sarich for lets say 1.5 and that leaves u with 1.83 left over, then trade connolly for a draft pick and that would save you another 2.9. 2.9 plus 1.83 equals 4.73...could help.

This is not what Id do, this is what I think might happen, thats all. Id love another Vet, had nosed preferbaly up front and Sarcih is fine on the back end, just prefer Hannan. I dont see how its possible to move Jaro at that money.

The Sabres would be out of their mind to get rid of a player like Kalinin over the way over-payed Spacek... this guy is a waste of money. Homer, you have him on the 3rd defensive pairing and he makes $3.3 M, that's insane. I know it will be hard to get rid of dead weight like that, but if they can for anything, they need to ASAP.

Just like the Hawks are stuck with Aucoin and the Leafs are stuck with Kubina, the Sabres are stuck with Spacek. It was a dumb move and now they have to live with it.

I hope they Sabres come storming back next year!!! I'll be rooting for you guys in the east and whenever you guys come down to the west coast against LA or something :) GODUCKS GO!!!

Spacek wasn't great but he was a plus 20 this year, that doesn't happen by accident. Of course he isn't worth 3.3M but they are stuck with him, no team in their right mind would take him, that's why I have him still on the team.

G - I agree on bringing back Conks'F - Vanek will probably have a 4.5M cap number so Drury or Briere will be gone sadly. I am hoping Roy will be more like 1.75-2M. Trying to sign Zubrus, or a vet like Amonte, O'Neill or Friesen could be a good cost effective move also.D - I think Paestch will cost a bit more than you think... a young mobile offensive defenseman is tough to come by in this league. I think they should sign Paestch, Timo Hebling and bring back Teppo 1 more year at a lower salary (he's just not worth 2.6M anymore)... they are going to also need cap room in 08-09 if they want to keep all-star Brian Campbell. Also, local by Aaron Miller is a UFA, so is Rivet in SJ.
