So i was talking to someone with direct knowledge of the situation that there was almost a 3 way trade done on day 1 of the draft just before it began.

They had mentioned that there was a trade in the works that would have sent the 3rd overall pick (clb) to calgary for the 6th overall pick + but that the blue jackets did not want to move to the 6th spot.

Enter the oilers 4th overall pick peter chiarelli was in and almost made this trade

blue jackets
ryan nugent-hopkins
4th overall pick (edm)

flames
3rd overall pick (clb)
sonny milano

oilers
6th overall pick (cgy)
dougie hamilton

this was the entire proposed trade i asked him twice to make sure but he said these were all the parts no additions anywhere , he also said this trade was essentially done until the last second when the blue jackets gm jarmo Kekäläinen played his hand a little quick , mentioned he had dubios above puljujarvi and that was the comment that killed the trade. chiarelli pulled out once he realized that he could get puljujarvi with the 4th overall and that stopped all wheels in motion.

now i personally think the trade should have been done even knowing that he would fall to 4 they would have still gotten a top prospect plus traded RNH for Hamilton they could have even ended up drafting a D .

The other teams also filled needs and they were on board untill the end (when the blue jackets took the podium) blue jackets got their center in RNH and the flames picked up a good prospect in milano plus puljujarvi to go with the kids they got.

who would have won this trade ?
would edm be a better team today if they made that trade?
let me know in the comments below

the only problem with this trade is CLB is already near the cap and adding RNH without losing any cap seems hard to believe. Especially with them signing Jones to over 5 mil.

with the 10% off-season overage that gives them 7.3m over the cap to play with and when you account david clarkson on the ltir this year is more then likely due to his back injury thats 5.25m in savings and after buying out Fedor Tyutin they actually have$68,532,141PROJECTED SALARY CAP HIT $4,467,859PROJECTED CAP SPACEso i think this could have more then worked with RNH having 6m coming in
