Its no surprise to anyone that the Leafs roster will look significantly different come the start of next season, I thought it would be fun to throw my couch potato GM’ing out there for others to read about. Not all of these would work together but all would be improvement for both teams.

New York Islanders:
Target: Griffin Reinhart + Josh Ho-Sang + Nikolai Kulemin
Trade: Phil Kessel + Jake Gardiner + 2016 2nd rd pick + Andrew MacWilliamrnIslanders need scoring, and that’s what Phil does. If Kulemin will come back to the leafs he is just a throw in for Cap relief but wouldn’t you pay an extra 3 mil a year and have kessel instead of kulemin? This is a move for the islanders to win now.

Columbus Blue Jackets
*First try and Sign Mike Reilly (zero to no chance because he will be in Mini or Chicago)
Target: Kerby Rychel
Trade: Jake Gardiner + 4th round pick
-They are looking for D to help now that are still young, although Jake didn’t have a great year last year, he had a great world championships and if he’s not traded I am ok with him coming back next year.

Edmonton Oilers
Target: Leon Draisaitl + Nikitin or Fayne
Trade: Phanuef + 3rd rd pick + low level prospect
-This is a tough one because Dion makes too much money, but by taking back a bag of pucks in either Nikitin, or Fayne he is a significant upgrade.

Carolina Hurricanes
Target: 2015 1st rd pick + Semin + Hayden Fluery
Trade: Phil Kessel + Tyler Bozak or Nazem Kadri + Stuart Percy
-Carolina may still need some help on Defence but the top 2 lines are awesome, and with the pick Toronto Picks Hanifin or Marner whoever they didn’t pick with the 4th. Percy is pretty much NHL ready and would be a great 3 pair defence with potential to be a top 4 D man.

Arizona
Target: 2015 1st rd Pick
Trade: 2015 1st rd Pick + Ryan Rupert
-Arizona has the rest of the London knights (what a great OHL organization) so dropping down to the 4th pick and grabbing rupert seems like a no brainer to me, then the leafs get Strome (who has a connection with Connor Brown) and he’s the big strong center we can build around.

Colorado
Target: Ryan O’Reilly
Trade: Tyler Bozak or Nazem Kadri + Jake Gardiner
-Win Win for both teams, Toronto gets a big strong young Center to build around and Colorado gets a depth Center man and an NHL ready D Man thats going to break out this year. Bozak was a beast in university in the high elevation which is a positive selling point. Colorado center would be DucheneLandeskog/Mackinnon/Bozak/Hamilton

If some of the trades go through the leafs wouldn’t be that bad to watch the next couple years as we stock the cupboards with high end talent by drafting and developing.

There is lots going on with this plan, and I can just picture the madness Shanny must be going through with trying to come up with his own. I trust Shanahan to make good sound decisions for the future, I just hope he can get the pieces we need to be a contender in the future. As much as small talented forwards are becoming more of the norm I hope Shanny sticks to a good plan and drafts big talented players starting from the center position, then to the D, then back to wingers and last find a goalie to draft later with high upside. No matter what happens its going to be fun and exciting off season and I am only looking at our future as positive because is there really any way things can go downhill from the here?

Thanks for reading
