Peca, overhyped?

Posted 2:12 PM ET | Comments 15
First off I have to say how much I enjoy hearing all of the updates that happen on this site. Even the Mike Peca ones. That's why I check in once or twice daily. However, with all due respect to everyone who's following the ongoing Peca saga, I'd like to shed a little light on the situation.

Mike Peca will not contribute greatly to a team this year. He hasn't done anything productive since the 2001 season, 25 goals. Since then, he's been collecting grossly inflated money and underperforming in every sense of the word. Now, I must say some Oiler fans would disagree slightly with this statement as he was a force in the playoffs for them. But what a lot of people forget is he was one of the players on the team ready to mail it in when it looked like they'd miss the playoffs. He was the one talking about leaving before the season was even over. And he never even started playing well until they won game 3 against the Sharks when he could see they might have a chance.

I know I may be being a little harsh with him. But take a look at his numbers over the past 4 seasons.

02-03 13g 42pts
03-04 11g 40 pts
05-06 9g 23pts
06-07 4g 15pts (35 games) which put him on pace for a blazing 10 goals, 35 points. Give or take.

So what's all the commotion for. So you can overpay a guy who's going to give you numbers that you can get from Shean Donovan or Marty Reasoner or any other 4th line contributer who gets paid under a million.

Leafs fans... you're not missing out on anything here. You do have some holes to fill but let's hope JFJ can find someone of good value to fill the void.

In conclusion, the Rangers should really give their heads a shake. They already have their top 2 centers and Sean Avery. Avery has been outperforming Peca over the last couple seasons and will be cheaper. I'm not an Avery fan, but unless you think Peca's going to sign to be a 4th liner, I don't think so. Let him go... let him be one of the guys to "try out" for a team. If you ask me, that's about all he's worth right now.

Couldn't agree more. All this hype over Peca is pretty ridiculous. He's far from being the worst guy to fill a roster spot, but he isn't any better than a third line center (on a crappy team to begin with). Both the Leafs and Rangers would do well to let this one slide and use the ice time that would be given to him to develop younger guys already in the system.

Of course the hype is overplayed, but what else is there to talk about related to hockey right now?

That's why I opened my blog the way I did... I love hearing the updates and seeing what everyone's up to, but just wanted to break down Peca for the player he really is now. Thanks for the feedback.

it was very well written, just pointing out the obvious "we need hockey now" attitude that all of us have.

lol... i hear ya!

yea, he is overhyped a bit... but Peca is the best PK specialist out there.... look at our PK, it dropped like 7% when he got injured

Pecca is a Defensive forward now specifically, he isn't going to ever put up more than 15 goals a year for the rest of the short remainder of his career. He is awsome when motivated, but he has a slight case of Yashin's F-that syndrome, but they say he is good in the dressing room. And, in truth, i would have him on my team if i could.

tasteofflame... I think you're wwaaayyyyyy off... I've never seen Peca take a game off

I think Peca is way past his 15 goal seasons. I think he realizes that and will play a better defensive game. He could be a great 3rd line guy that plays against a lot of team's top lines. $1m for Peca isn't a bad thing. He's a leader on and off the ice.

Peca will probably be pulling in less than what Avery is making and a 3rd line of him, Avery and Callahan will be a very good shut down line, with the definite possiblity of throwing up some good points..I wouldn't take a chance on Peca for anything over 1.3 mil, but less than that and it would be worth it...Not to mention he's great on the PK and Rangers just got rip of three of their better PKers(Ortmeyer, Cullen, Nylander)

Idiot...you dont sign Peca for his offense...you sign Peca for his defense, his grit, and his faceoff ability. As a leaf fan, the only guy on the team now that I'd want taking defensive zone faceoffs is Sundin. Peca can do that, its a very underrated ability.

Peca should come back to the Leafs for the simple fact JFJ will evetually grab someone worse.. he has a tendency to be a horrible GM with crappy decisions... Toskala was the only golden move ... Peca is good but will he be the same after his injury last year??? Plus, Blake is going to be a huge factor so would Peca be better knowing his life time friend is with him ..??

Easy there blue and white... are you telling me he was that valuable for you guys last year? I sincerely doubt it. At least one leaf fan on here can bring stats with him to back him up. 7% drop in the PK is somewhat significant and I was unaware of that. Defensive specialists ARE underrated, you guys are right about that... I don't know what the Flames would do without Stephane Yelle, who on a side note, I would take time and time again over Mike Peca. As for your salary guesses; if all Peca was asking for was 1 mill or 1.3, i'm pretty sure he'd be signed right now. But I guarantee you he's asking for much much more.

I agree with you msleep because why you think the Leafs havent grabbed him ... They can afford him at 1 mill roughy and his best bud is begging him to come .. he is asking much than he is worth right now
