There have been thoughts of a possible outdoor game at Fenway Park by not only the fans but also the media. The outdoor game between Buffalo and Pittsburg has drawn a sort of excitement in Buffalo that Boston could use. The Bruins would benefit if they did this at Fenway. As we know there is a lack of interest in the Bruins and an outdoor game at Fenway is just what the Bruins need. This would not only draw the die hard Bruins fans but also the Red Sox’ fans who just want to get into the park. The history Fenway Park has would only help draw attention to this event, if it was to happen. This event without doubt would sell out easily, which is a rarity for the Bruins. The event would cost Jeremy Jacobs a big chunk of cash, and we all know how cheap our great owner Jeremy Jacobs is. He would profit in the end from this because Fenway Park would sell out. Fenway has twice the amount of seats in it than the TD Bank North Garden. Not only would the Bruins profit from the game itself but also grow a fan interest in the team.

This event would be hard set up because of the famous the New England Weather. We have seen days where it has been 60 degrees in December and then a blizzard the next day. If it was 60 degrees the ice would obviously melt, and if there was a blizzard it would be kind of hard to play a hockey game. The NHL is smart though and has set up another day in January for the Buffalo and Pittsburg match-up incase of weather preventing circumstances. This would be an acceptable procedure to enact if the Bruins were to try an outdoor game at Fenway. Overall, an outdoor game is just what the doctor ordered to put Boston back on the hockey map.

This could actually be a possibility both the Red Sox and the Bruins management has stated that they would be open to the idea. Bruins Executive Vice President Charlie Jacobs also noted Gillette Stadium and Harvard Stadium as other possible sites, for a possible outdoor game. I have also heard Boston College’s Alumni Stadium thrown out there, but the wonderful residents of Chessnut Hill would never allow it. Fenway would obviously be the best place to have the game, because of how popular the Red Sox are compared to the other sport teams in Boston. The Red Sox are by far the favorite team. As noted in the original article many would just come to see Fenway.

A game at Fenway could present a problem though. Because of the ballparks dimensions it could be difficult to align a rink that could be viewable by all seats. Gillette Stadium has their seats at a higher elevation from the field than Fenway. This provides good viewing angles from almost any seat in the stadium. He Buffalo and Pittsburg game worked out very nice in a football stadium. If the game was played without boards there would be no problem, but it could become hard to see over the boards because Fenway’s seats start at practically the same level as the field. The Red Sox and Bruins would have to work on some way to set up the rink so everyone can see the game.
