Calm Down Leafs Nation

Posted 7:58 AM ET | Comments 5
Welcome to my first blog...ever. After reading the comments from so many disgruntled Leafs fans, and watching the Leafs pre-season games as of late I felt I had to start my own blog so I could throw my own 2 cents into the mix. My message to leafs nation: Calm down.

Every move the Leafs make is scrutinized over and over again by the fans, and the media. Folks, this is pre-season, teams are not meant to be in top form. Yes the Leafs looked terrible last night as Buffalo destroyed them 7-2, and yes Toskala looked bad, but we need to learn to be patient. After two years of missing the playoffs it is easy to see why Leafs fans are frustrated, and I feel your pain.

This team will come together, and hey, if they don't make the playoffs this year (which I believe they will) at least we can hope that JFJ finally moves along, and the Leafs get serious about their management. Paul Maurice is a great coach, and you can bet after last night that his Leafs will improve for their next game against Detriot on Friday.

As for Toskala, give the guy a chance to get his legs back and get into the groove with a new team. He's not used to the Leafs style of play, nor the pressure of the Toronto Media and fans. He will adapt, and he will succeed. In my opinion he is a much better Goalie than Andrew Raycroft was last season, but hey, maybe a little competition will result in a more competitive and improved Raycroft.

It is way too early to throw in the towel, and call for Toskala's head as many fans seem to be doing.

Expect more from me soon, this first post was mainly to vent my frustration with Leafs Fans claiming we'll miss the playoffs again without seeing a single regular season game. In the future I will be blogging about more specific topics, and focusing on analysis of the team and it's players.

Hope you enjoyed the first one.

I agree, do not read too much into this Toronto. I think the Sabres can still play better hockey than last night.

npc9o2 great blog .... im glad you wrote it so i wouldnt have to.Leafs Nation is making me sick. 1 pre-season game and already im hearing trade sunding trade mccabe for draft picks. my god these fans can't actually think of themselves as fans. i remember when eddie the eagle first landed in T.O he had the most horrible pre-season and got booed during it, but what happened during the regular season? he pulled it together and they made the playoffs.

Oh yeah I agree 100%, never panic in pre-season. That's why it's called 'pre' season. You can't tell me players are going 100% when the score is 4-0. I know they should be, but the reality is they're not - especially given the ferocious hit the night before. I think when the team settles down, everything's gonna be fine.

No I think the leafs are screwed lol. Im joking but they will be in a dog fight again this year for a playoff spot. If they dont make the playoffs It might be a good thing for MLSE. THey need to totally revamp their front office and not making the playoffs 3 years in a row for the first time might make that happen. Its time they stop using 'quick fix tactics'. They have to start using their draft picks and building from within instead of bringing in guys like Raycroft and Toskala. All the successful Franchises have done this (Anaheim, Ottawa, Detroit, New Jersey, San Jose), so it is no secret. A serious re building phase is in order. They need a whole new defence built around Tomas Kaberle with guys who can skate and move the puck. McCabe, Kubina, and Gill are not the answer. No mabye im bweing a little harsh. They have a shot at the playoffs this year and could give a couple of teams a hard time in the playoffs. But does anyone consider them a contender? Its time for a change in leaf land and leaf fans need to have patience. Fegusson has sold your future and you wont see it until its too late. Such a passionate fan base deserves better (even though i hate you with every fibre of my being).

I think its great Maurice is giving the new guys lots of chances to show what they can do. I do not care if we win one single preseason game because in the stats they mean nothing. All I do care about is how we do in the regular season. and well that has not started yet and even if we get off to a slow start its how we end up that matters not the way we get there. I am confident we not only make the playoffs but we play some good hockey in the playoffs. My only hope is the leafs stop taking so many dumb penalties. No way they are going to win always playing shot handed.
