Time for Roloson to Go...

Posted 12:19 AM ET | Comments 6
So I finally found out how to blog on this great site and lucky for you it just happens to be on a night where I have a few things to say. Edmonton played the Blue jackets tonight and lost. Guess who was in net???? Matty Garon....nope because I'm pretty sure if he had then the 4 goals Edmonton scored would have been enough to win the game, guess again. Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers you say....well no he wasn't even on the bench and except for the great game against Calgary 4 weeks ago, he hasn't seen any game action. So who does that leave???? If you guessed Dwayne Roloson you would be correct.

But I really am a glass have full type of guy so lets start with a couple positive things about Mr. Roloson. First... well he is a good positional Goalie. Second He had a very good game the other night against Carolina. And third he made a really good save on Nash tonight in the opening minutes of the games. Unfortunitly, as always, he took him self so far out of position that if it had not been for the great save by Smid it would have been 1-0 game.

I'm sick of the media talking about Roloson being such a great goalie because he got us to the cup a few years ago, or that he's Edmonton's number one. Fact of the matter he had one good game this year. Yes that game got the team out of a game losing skid and yes he played great in that game he was also in net for the first game of said skid. Yes he won the next game but, as seems to be the norm, Edmonton had score 5 goals to get the win. We saw this on many occasions last Spring when Garon was hurt. The Oilers would have to play games to out score their opponent because they weren't able to depend on the goaltending. And yet again the supporters come out....

Well it's time to face the facts....

Dwayne Roloson is not a number one Goalie....

And here's why

If he spent as much time trying to stop pucks as he does over acting (see tonight's dive after Nash skated past him. Make Avery look like a amateur) or whining to the referee (watch any games he's in) then he might make a a descent goalie.

Flopping around the ice like a fish out of water is not a style of goaltending (and earth to Pierre McGuire just because he acting like he's making a save dosen't mean it's a save unless he actually touches the puck).

As a goaltender you are expected to make the first save but if you make a good save and are so far out of position to make the second save, well...uhm....yeh (kudos to the D-men on learning that your guys are on your when it comes to rebound controls and second saves...and again Pierre McGuire, please explain how the goalie gets credit for rebound control when it's his defense men clearing the puck from the crease cause the goalie is no where to be found).

OK so he came out at the end of last season and won some games when Garon was hurt. Don't forget the Oliers wouldn't have needed to win those games if it Roloson hadn't lost all those games earlier in the season.

Well that my grip. If you're against it and are a big Roloson supporter the hopefully you'll enjoy watching him in New Jersey in the near future. A message to the coach and Management...I 'm a big K-Lowe and Mac-T fan but guys if your going to rest the season on this guys shoulders again, then I think you should be shown the door. I've supported many of the trades and decisions you've guys have made (yes even the Smyth trade) but come on....how many times are you going to be allowed to make the same mistake.

My sense is Garon would have stopped a couple more of those pucks but that's easy to say when your team is bouncing between two "number 1-2s". It's a bit of a mess right now. That's the main point for me on this subject. Neither are great but I want to believe they are enough. That's not going to happen when the overall team game seems like a bad game of pinball. Bad decisions at bad times.I guess you are not a proponent of a Garon rumor I was opened to earlier where he could be on his way to Jersey---Mark Spector at Sportsnet.ca.I think that's what we have to consider here. Is Garon who they want, jury is out. It's out for me, especially until their overall game picks-up.Mac-T went with the hot-hand philosophy over going back to his number one who would have been coming off some sub-par play. Tough call. Mac-T haters can line up on this one. We'll see if the effects of competing number 1's has them playing better individually.Ya, Roloson overreacts to the point of annoying but I figure it's a tool he uses to get in the game.All-star goaltending would have most-likely won them the game last night. They both show glimpses but they don't have it.....who knows, maybe management will be looking for a number 1 sooner then later. Maybe a team that proves to have a solid, up and coming back-up that can deal there numberone or vice versa. Halak or the kid in Atlanta, maybe others as the season continues. I really hope Garon can step-up this year and beyond. Keep in mind, he's 30.

While Roli should share some of the blame... surely you cannot nail the Oilers inability to clear the zone on his shoulders. Time in and time out the Oil will one, two, sometimes even three chances to blast it down the ice, bang it off the boards, bounce it off the glass... yet somehow they continue to fail in this respect. It has been a problem for so long now that I can call the opposing teams goal 10 seconds before it happens.Further adding insult to injury is the fact that in last nights game... the Oilers get caught up ice... thus creating an odd man rush (including Torres of all players)... you can hear Roli banging his stick to signal the end of the penalty... but no one responds. He did what he could...In the end, Garon would have faired no different... win as a team, lose as a team.

It is now 5-1 Pit... point and case. If Roli was responsible yesterday then the same logic should apply to this evening. IMO Garon has looked far more suspect then Roloson this season. That doesn't mean that I am a proponent of keeping Roloson... what I am suggesting, however, is that this lacklustre play is a sympton of a much larger problem. This team is not commited to defense at all... poor positional play, combined with a lack of forechecking and a frustrating inability to clear the zone has and will continue to spell diaster for this team. It's time that all Oilers fans face it... this team has not looked good all year, and playing on the road for as long as they have has only magnified their medicrity to this point.

Hate to break it to you, but Rollie has been the best of the 3 so far.
