According to Tom Gulitti of the Record, the Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk are “status quo” on a new contract but the Devils are still actively trying to re-sign him.
Kovalchuk’s 17 year deal worth $102 million was ruled invalid by the NHL.
….At some point, the two sides will come to terms on a deal. Kovalchuk spoke openly at his press conference about wanting to be a Devil and that appears to be the way its going to go. Its been a few weeks since the decision was made and there hasn’t been anything at all indicating that he will sign anywhere but NJ.
While he technically isn’t a Devil right now, he is a Devil. Russia could still be an option, but it’s looking like at some point Kovy will return to playing his home games at the Rock.
