The NHL Awards show has too strong a Canadian flavor to it. We, who grew up on the border appreciate it. But, if the NHL wants the game to appeal more to the casual fan in the states they have to make these events more cross cultural. If I'm someone who knows a little bit about the game, a show like the one last night would keep me following the more American sports like football, basketball, etc. It is also kind of minor leagueish.
The NHL owners and Gary Bettman should ante up the cash for a legit MC. I like Ron McClean as much as the next guy but his strength isn't jokes. The league should pay the cash for a comedian who knows the game. Denis Leary would be a good choice. He knows the game and is a funny guy.
Since Versus treated the league like a red headed step child last night, the PR damage was negligible. In the future the league's goal is to be treated like a first born, planned kid. You know like the NFL, NBA, MLB etc. Minor league events like last night will continue making the league look like an ooops baby.
Why is it the fans have more clues then the people in charge? I love this game but this league frustrates me sometimes.Good post and from my statement above I agree 110%
Thanks hockeylover. I just really think the event was meant for the Canadian audiance and was presented that way. Why? Well, maybe because the people in Canada watch the show in droves.
I was planning on watching it from 7-9 last night. Only one problem. It wasn't run on Versus untill 11pm. That is insane. I didn't make it throught the whole show. Versus has been a joke since day 1. Period end of story. They need to get back on ESPN. Somehow, someway Buttman needs to get this fixed and quick. Hockeylover.............great point on Dennis Leary. That would be amazing.Gibert....... Great post.
