Okay, I'll admit, Chris Drury and Daniel Briere are two very talented hockey players, but are they really worth the money some teams are willing to offer? Will Peter Forsberg have what it takes to still be an elite NHLer after numerous injuries? Is Scott Gomez really going to prosper outside of New Jersey? These are questions I've been thinking about lately and the answer to all of them is not a definite yes.
Sure these guys are all pretty good hockey players that can help a team in more ways than one but some of the numbers that are being thrown out there are pretty ridiculous. We've all see what happens when teams rush in too quickly to sign superstars fresh off an excellent season to big contracts then the results just aren't there, Alexei Yashin, Nikolai Khabibulan, Sergei Fedorov, Ed Jovanovski, are just a few names that come to mind. In reality, at least in most cases, it's the big huge multi-million, multi-year contract that kills the talent of so many great hockey players.
My point is, I know it's fun to watch the free agents get picked up by different teams and to talk about who's going where but why overpay for a player who's not just not worth it. Don't get me wrong, I know it's a lot to do with taking risks but to all those General Managers out there just please do your homework before throwing 7 Million dollars at a player who had just one or two good seasons or a player who might have a 90+ point season in the near future.
I think Gomez will do just fine alongside Jagr. Briere is overrated. Drury...probably overpaid.
briere is definitely overpaid, while drury is definitely overrated.however, I still think today was an awful day for my Sabres.thankfully we've some excellent young guys by the names of Clarke MacAurthur and Drew Stafford to fill their shoes....oh yeah, and Darcy Regier needs to be impeached.
The two clowns could not even score a power play goal!!! Even when they had a 5 on 3 powerplay they could not even keep the puck in the opponents end!!! They are worth that kind of money??? I think somebody should call a cop!!! Somebody got robbed here and its not the Sabres
