Newmarket takes Game 1 in Battle of Younge Street 2012-2013

Today’s action saw the Hurricanes take on their rivals the Aurora Tigers in game 1 of this season Battle of Younge Street. Today’s starting goalies were Brett Sinclair for the visiting Tigers and of course Matt Wintjes for Newmarket who today made his 12th start of this year’s campaign. Going into today’s action the North Division leading Canes would have only a 1 point lead on Aurora. Right from the opening faceoff the crowd of 533 was into every minute of the action. The Hurricanes would hold off the Tigers and some early pressure thanks to strong defensive play and would find themselves on the board just over 9 minutes into the game as Brandon Francisco would gather the opening tally with the assists going to Justin Mailolino and Calvin Higley. Newmarket would find themselves shorthanded two times this period, Nick Coric would pick up a minor for slashing at 10:39 which the managed to kill off and Canes goal scorer Francisco would get called for hooking shortly after at 13:32. Newmarket although they were shorthanded would manage to apply offensive pressure and this would be proven as Daniel Leavens would put the Hurricanes up 2-0 after receiving a beautiful pass from Forward Taylor Chick at 15:15 of period number one, Austin Rigney would pick up the second assist on the shorthanded marker. Shots for this period would see Newmarket leading Aurora 18-12
The 2nd period would see Newmarket continue to play aggressively and fast paced just like they did in the opening 20 minutes fans would see their team pile on chance after chance thanks to an early two man advantage for the Canes as Aurora’s Mike Sones and Mike Keenan would have to serve minors for elbowing and hooking with both penalties coming with just three minutes played of the middle frame. Unfortunately for the hometown Hurricanes they would be unable to net a power play on the 5 on 3, they would in fact finish the game 0-3 with the man advantage. But at 10:41 of the period fans would see Brandon Francisco streak in on a breakaway but he would in the end be hauled down which meant we were going to be treated to the most exciting moment in hockey, the Penalty Shot. Brandon would then come in and send the puck through the five hole of Brett Sinclair to put Newmarket ahead 3 goals to none. Newmarket would once again add to their lead when Jordan Dunin would collect his 2nd goal of the young season at 16:09 with Leavens picking up the only assist for the Canes fourth goal of the afternoon. The second period would come to an end with the canes lead 4-0 and picking up 16 shots in the process and the Tigers would manage only 9 shots on Canes goalie Matt Wintjes.
The home town crowd would barely be back in their seats and with just 16 seconds gone in the final period Elliot Burlon would assist Thomas Beretta on a goal to put their team ahead 5-0. Tempers would then begin to flare as there was a delayed penalty to Newmarket that would be whipped out as Aurora would finally find the back of the net when Robert Angiolella would break the shut out for Wintjes thanks to a little help from Dylan Sikura Mihkel Poldma who gathered the assists on the goal coming at 6:04 of the third period to now cut Newmarkets lead to four goals. Newmarket would then see themselves on the wrong end of a 5 on 3 power play as Defense man Sean Walker would be sent to the box for a kneeing minor a call in which many people in the building question and the other 2 minute minor would go to Defense man Alex Bontje. Nemwarket would be able to kill one half of the two man disadvantage but not the other as Aurora Captain Daniel Clairmont would fire the puck home at 9:12 of the period as Tyler Shaw and Mihkel Poldma collected the assists, this being Poldma’s second assist the Aurora Tigers would finish 1 for 4 on the power play thanks to this goal which cut the Canes lead to three with the score now 5-2. The deciding goal would then be scored at 12:12 of the period as Newmarket Captain Chris Chiste would bury the puck into the back of the net and see his Nemwarket Hurricanes now lead by a score of 6-2, Daniel Leavens and Jordan Dunin would pick up the assists to cap off both of their strong performances.
So 6-2 would turn out to be the final score and we would see the winning side collect 8 shots for a game total of 45 and the Aurora Tigers firing another 9 shots to finish with a game total of 27. Hurricanes Forward Brandon Francisco would receive player of the game honors due to his to goal game and this win would now give the Hurricanes a 3 point lead in the OJHL’s North Division as they head into their next action Thursday night as they host the Pickering Panthers a team that in the last two meetings have beaten the Canes in both Overtime and a Shootout.
I would also like to note that before Sunday afternoon’s action there was a presentation for the OJHL September Player of the Month which was awarded to Matt Wintjes who posted a 6-1-1 record with two wins coming in way of a shutout. (Yes I know i mentioned this in a previous blog but it was worth mentioning a second time)
