Do Leafs Fans have hope?

On January 9 the executives of MLSE made the decision to relieve Brian Burke as General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs with control of the team being handed over to, what many can consider, Burke’s understudy Dave Nonis. As many of you leafs fans remember when Burke was brought into Toronto there was a sense of renewed hope and a belief that he would turn this team into a winning team as he had with the Anaheim Ducks.
My question to all of you is with Burke being relieved of his duties and Nonis stepping in do you think Burke did what he set out to do, to set this team up to be a winner for years to come or has the hope the Burke had instilled in fans finally disappeared with his firing?
I think the answer to that is no, I believe that this young leafs team is looking better than it has in decades and although Burke is gone, Dave Nonis has helped to renew this hope in fans that has been lost since a disappointing end to last season.
The Marlies are stacked with young talent from Joe Colbourne to Nazem Kadri or Jake Gardiner to Ben Scrivens, the list goes on and on, not to mention the young talent playing in juniors such as Morgan Reilly, Tyler Biggs and David Broll. The most intriguing thing about all of these names is that Nonis had a hand in bringing all of these players in alongside Burke, from working the phones in trades to long nights scouting kids for the draft, Nonis knows these players and what their capable of. He has been there through mostly Burke’s entire tenure with the Leafs and knows this organization inside and out. Although you can expect some changes in philosophy from Burke to Nonis they have relatively the same idea of what team they want to see on that ice every night and what team it takes to win. This means Leafs fans are going to get the tough, fast, hard-hitting and high paced games that they were promised rather than an entirely new perspective if a General Manager had been brought in from outside the system. Some of you may be curious as to what type of General Manager Nonis is, well let’s just say he is the reason Luongo is in Vancouver and many think he’ll be the reason Luongo will be in a Leafs sweater come time to drop the puck. Only time will tell but one thing is for sure the next week could define Nonis’ career with the Maple Leafs.
I believe in Nonis as General Manager of the Leafs and I think that he will add the few pieces left to make this team a contender for a long time to come, but what do you think Leafs Nation, is your hope gone or do you believe this is the season that we finally see some playoff hockey in Toronto?

Without a goalie they are bottom team again! With a goalie they have a chance at making the playoffs!
I definitely don't see playoff hockey this year, probably not next year either, unless there are some big changes of course. I like Burke and I do think he did some very good things, the only real set-back being the Kessel deal. If the Kessel deal hadn't been made the leafs would be in an entirely different position now. I'm hopeful that Nonis can pull off some good deals to get the team back in the playoffs.
careful what you wish for with Nonis. he is known to not pull the trigger when things seem obvious. His big splash being Lu, but that was after Bert did his head hunting job and needed out. If you guys think he is going to buy the farm think again. He will wait years before he pulls off a decent trade that he wins.

It is interesting to note that Nonis will take his time moving especially young players. Yet now I see a comment here that says careful what you wish for Nonis may not pull the trigger. I look at both parts of last year, but more at the first part since that was the major part of the season. They have a fast young team, if they can cut down on goals against(hello Carlyle) and receive the goaltending they expect from Reimer and Scrivens they should make a push for the playoffs.
totally agree i mean you saw the young talent at work last night with kadri and scrivens just wait for gardiner to be back in the lineup and this team should compete for a spot 6th to 8th is my bet
