So the Anaheim Ducks have signed two of their big free agents. First they sign Ryan Getzlaf through 2021. That's a rather lengthy contract considering the NHL wanted to scale back those long term contracts. But even more impressive is the $8,250,000 per season over the next 6 seasons. Mind-blowing numbers when you consider that also was one of the major issues that kept hockey on ice until January.
Now, the Ducks do it again. Signing Corey Perry to a massive 8 year contract at an annual price tag of $8,625,000. So can anyone explain why we had the lockout? Boy, I can't wait to see what guys like Ryane Clowe Sign for. 8 years, $6,000,000 a season?
This is just a slap in the face to the fans. We sat idly by waiting and hoping and waiting some more. Just for our favorite game to get back to business. We watched the owners and players squabble over millions of dollars, length of contracts and words uttered by both sides.... and still the fans waited! Finally in the 11th hour a great compromise came about. Happily congratulating themselves on a job well done. This time... they fixed the problems... oh!!! Really?
This all boils down to greed and stupidity. Greed by the players, who want to get paid like the other sports do, but have nowhere near the following. All those millions have gone to the player's heads. The owners on the other hand, led by the pee brain midget otherwise known as Gary Bettman, can't control themselves when it comes to getting players. They don't learn... Example... Brian Campbell in Florida. A very good player... but is he worth $7,000,000+ per season? How's that minus 20 working out for you Panthers? Oh you hear his name in the trade rumors... but, the big question in all those rumors is his contract.
But hey, who cares what a player makes right? The fans show up and pay those increased ticket prices and bloating concession costs. So it's all good!!!
Great blog. Owners are hypocrites.
No
No kidding. I 100% blame the owners. If my employer would pay me whatever I wanted in salary and then they lost money, how is any of that my problem? The owners should learn financial restraint. Not the players problem the 30 owners in the league keep giving out insane contracts.
How is the Commish supposed to control salaries again? How are the owners supposed to compete with each other again, if not by throwing money around? You guy are hypocrites or at least very confused. You hate the owners, you want the players to get less; which is it?
Allocation of resources, the players get 50% of HHR. If Anaheim wants to invest in high end forwards and can manage it under the cap so be it. They have lots of young cheap guys who balance this out. Salary caps destroy the middle class of players over time.
