As July 5th approaches, Don't expect the Detroit Redwings to be in on many of the available free agents. Why? Because, The Redwings already have a 20 players signed for next season and they still need to sign some of their own RFA's. Brendan Smith, Gustav Nyquist and Joakim Anderson still need contracts. These are players the Redwings want to keep in the fold. Signing those three will give them their 23 man roster.
That list doesn't include Damien Brunner who is a unrestricted free agent. The Redwings need to sign him as well. So, if they accomplish that, they will have 24 players under contract for the upcoming season. More than enough players to begin the season. So, the need to bring in another body seems unlikely.
Rumors has it that the Redwings are interested in Stephen Weiss. So assuming they sign him. That would put Detroit at 25 players and the end of the Free Agent hunt. Weiss is a center and the Wings want a strong faceoff man. But in my humble opinion, the Wings need a top defenseman (unfortunately there are none in the Free Agent Market) and a power forward. But most likely the Redwings won't be a major player in this year's Free Agent market.
But for the hell of it, I am going to list players I believe the Redwings should go after.
#1 NATHAN HORTON ~ Forward Age: 28
He fits the power forward role the redwings so desperately need and he is money in the playoffs. I know, I know... He has an injury history that cannot be overlooked. But with the "youth" movement the Redwings have committed themselves to, His age make him a perfect fit. He also scores goals. Something the wings need more than anything else.
#2 David Clarkson ~ Forward Age: 29
Clarkson also makes perfect sense for the Redwings youth movement. At 29, he's been in the league longer enough to be considered a veteran, but he's young enough to give the wings many years of service. He can score goals and mix it up.
#3 Derek Roy ~ Forward Age: 30
Not much needs to be said about Derek Roy. He's an upgrade on Filppula in all aspects of the game.
#4 Ryane Clowe ~ Forward Age: 30
Clowe is nasty and mean. He is clutch in the playoffs. He goes a little quiet in the regular season, but he brings so much to the table... Leadership, toughness, grit, and a secondary scoring. All things the Redwings could use.
#5 Ryan Whitney ~ Defense Age: 30
The Redwings have a good history with bringing in players who have not reached their potential with other teams. Ryan Whitney could be one of those players. After some fairly good seasons early on in his career. He has really taken steps backward playing in Edmonton. He could be a real "Sleeper" in this year's free agent market. He would also give some veteran leadership to a very young core of Redwing defensemen.
P.S. GOTTA LOVE THE HATERS IN THE COMMENTS. HEY ALL YOU HATERS. THE ONLY THING I GOT WRONG WAS ALFREDSSON INSTEAD OF BRUNNER.
I HAD NO ILLUSION THAT MY WISH LIST WOULD BE FILLED. READING COMPREHENSION COURSES ARE NEED I SEE.
