Hello, In my first blog I thought I would talk about the concerns Flyers fans have about our cap situation. As we all know the cap has dropped to $64.3 million and most hockey writers and bloggers are quick to point out that the flyers as of now sit $2,053,522 over that limit, however none seem to include the fact that that is for 25 players. According to the "Hockey Operations Guidlines" all teams must submit an "Opening day roster" of no more than 23 players and a minumum of 20. So no matter what the Flyers cannot start the season being over by that $2,053,522. In fact it is quite easy for us to be cap compliant with out making any major moves. Now while I do believe there is a possibility we may trade a defenceman before the season starts it is not necessarily a must. Lets say we don't, here are a couple of other options
Option 1 - Place Pronger on the IR before the start of the season, waive someone or send Scott Laughton back to juniors. Done. Seems easy right, the only downfall is that if Pronger is placed on the IR pryor to the opening day roster we won't reap the full benifit of his cap relief. Because of a weird rule, by doing so, the Flyers will be deemed to have already replaced him and will not be eligible for further relief. The Flyers will effectively only be able to exceed the salary cap by $2,053,522 under Chris Pronger’s LTIR exemption. If we are able to start the season with Pronger on the roster we will be allowed to exceed the cap by $2,841,429
So as you can see It may be better to start the season with Pronger in the roster. That leads us to option 2
Option 2 - Send Scott Laughton back to juniors, waive say Gervais and Bourdon. That would give us $2,544,167 in relief($490,645 cap space) while carrying Pronger into the season. We could then put Pronger on the IR and gain an additional $4,941,429($5,432,066 cap space total)
So for me option 2 is the way to go. Obviously there are others we could waive but I chose Bourdon and Gevas because of the log jam on defence. Also I feel that Laughton could use one more season in juniors to work on his offensive game, he is already strong enough defensivly to play in the NHL, but one more season of Juinor might give him the chance to really dominate offensivly and come back next year with much more confidence in that area.
Anyway before I begin to bore you, I will wrap it up and say that as of now we can easily start the season without giving up much or anything. I know alot of people are hoping we can move Meszaros but I feel if we dont have to we might as well hold onto him. We all know what happened last year to our defence, and it seems the more NHL Defenceman you have the better. I will leave you with 2 sets of lines under the salary cap.

Good read! Option 3 are the players I would like to see suit up although I would like to swap Simmonds and Read, that way there would be a nice balance of size, grit, skill, and scoring on all 3 forward lines. I too would like to see Meszaros stay (Coburn too)... if I had to choose a D to be traded, I would go with Grossmann... easiest to replace and I am okay with either resigning Meszaros or gaining even more cap relief if he doesnt... they will have some big signings internally to keep their young players together in the coming years!
Scott Laughton is not eligible to play in the minors. If Laughton fails to make the team he will be sent back to junior and he will come off the cap that way. Good read.
I believe there is a penalty for being over the cap when the season starts, but yes your cap problems go away once pronger is on LTIR. great lines, if the goaltending can overachieve the team will do well
is it possible that we could send any of our guys on two-way contracts such as B. Schenn, Coutorier, and/or Laughton down to the minors on the first day of the season and then place pronger on the LTIR and finally call them back up from the minors the next day. For example could we send B. Schenn and Coutorier down to the minors before the first game of the season and waive bourdon to get under the cap then after the game we place Pronger on LTIR which gives us the full cap relief and then we call up Schenn and Coutorier to play the second game. Its sounds complicated and unlikely but is it possible?
