For starters I must confess that I am in the same boat as many Leaf fans. Staying positive and optimistic in the face of so much failure and heartache is quite difficult. The motto of “innocent until proven guilty” is reversed – “100% failure unless we finally win a Stanley Cup”. This leads to tons of unnecessary negativity and stress. Of course this is not mental sickness like the title suggests, but a solution to this can go a long way to cure more serious issues.
A couple of months ago during the 4 game losing streak, I discovered a possible antidote. It occurred to me that nothing is perfectly bad or negative. Even a terrible loss like Game 7 last year against Boston had a 4-1 lead midway through the 3rd period. What a beautiful play by Kessel to shoot off Rask’s pads right to Kadri for that 4th goal. So instead of focusing on the loss, I have gratitude for the good part and get a good feeling from that.
The following appeared in an article on Entrepeneur.com
http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/230613 I was led to it from a tweet from @LittleMotivator who is a huge hockey fan and always has very inspirational tweets. (I actually came across him from a tweet by James Van Riemsdyk.)
Express gratitude. One of the easiest ways to increase your positivity is to express gratitude. Being thankful for what you currently have immediately releases any negativity that you might be holding onto. Gratitude instantly puts you in touch with the feeling of love. Where love resides, fear and all other negative emotions cannot.
One can’t think 2 thoughts at once. If you have a positive, grateful thought, the awful depressing thoughts of losing can’t get in.
And guess what! The Leafs started winning after that , and that is definitely something to be grateful for.
I would like to get feedback on the following thought:
Everyone talks about how the media is so difficult and it is such a pressure to play in Toronto. The fans are so hard on the players and so on. How about expressing gratitude to the players for their efforts and successes. Maybe that will inspire them to play harder. Hold them accountable, but don’t be overbearing and critical. What form of media would they read from the fans? Do they read their tweets? Well if we can make the tweets trend, then that message would get to them. So what do you think?
