The NHL's next potential superstar could have a serious injury following a fight that took place on Tuesday night in Erie, Pennsylvania.
The Ontario Hockey League's Erie Otters are the league's best teams this season with a 16-1-0-1 record after 18 games this season in the OHL. Their top player on the roster, and potentially the top overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, is center Connor McDavid.
In Tuesday night's game against the Mississauga Steelheads, McDavid got involved in a fight with Steelheads forward Bryson Ciafrone. McDavid responded to a slash from Ciafrone and the two dropped the gloves. McDavid was able to land four or five good punches in on Ciafrone before the linesmen broke the two players up. After the two were separated, McDavid was in significant pain, favoring his right hand. McDavid was sent to the dressing room and received a five-minute major for fighting and a game-misconduct for removing his helmet during the fight.
Before the fight, McDavid registered an assist on Erie's third goal from rookie Alex DeBrincat in the first period. In the second period, McDavid scored on the powerplay to give him his 16th goal on the season and his 51st point on the year.
After the fight, McDavid was evaluated by the Otters medical staff and was sent to a local hospital in Erie for more X-Rays.
