Today the Sabres, well, Steve Ott, revealed the new 3rd jersey to the public via Twitter. After two months of sneak peaks and clues about the 3rd jersey, the jersey has been unveiled to some harsh criticism. When I saw the jersey, all I thought was, "um..."
Here's what they look like:
When I was brainstorming what the 3rd jersey could look like, I thought it would be cool if the jersey having a gold front and a blue back. The idea of the gold jersey was a cool idea to me and it seemed like it could work. But this design is not the way to go.
I believe that the word, "Buffalo," is completely unnecessary above the logo. It does not need to be there, and it would look just fine without it. The font just does not seem to fit the jersey, and it would've fit better on the bottom of the jersey like the old red 3rd jersey back in the black, red and white days.
Another point I'd like to make is that the sleeves of the uniform just suck. I like the trim the current jersey has on the sleeves with the gold and white trim on the home jersey, and both colors with the blue for the away jerseys. The grey at the bottom of the sleeves are unnecessary, and does not fit the rest of the jersey.
As I mentioned with the "Buffalo" font, the back font with Ott's name and the number do not seem right neither. The name plate is not as bad, but the numbers should not be so round.
I believe the Sabres should not have strayed away from their original jersey design to make it gold. Keep the trim, keep the logo and fonts of the lettering and numbers. Just turn the navy blue to gold, add some blue (maybe some grey) to the arm trim, get rid of the blue on the back and make it gold too, and keep the font of the numbers and letters. I like the new captain and alternates patches, the Excellence concept written on the inside of the neck, and I like the pants to go with the jersey.
Something like this:
Poorly Photoshopped, I know...
Unless Steve Ott and the Buffalo Sabres are just playing a joke on us, I guess there's nothing we can do now but to embrace the design and spend our money on buying the jersey. I will not be, but I know of some people who will. Other than that, 8 days until training camp starts, 11 days until the preseason begins, and 28 days until the Sabres play Detroit on October 2nd.
