The Penguins are 1-1 in their first 2 games of the 2018-2019 season. The Penguins were able to squeak out a win against Washington in a 7-6 goal fest. Saturday the Penguins were absolutely blasted by Montreal 5-1. Matt Murray has allowed 11 goals in 2 games to start the year, but is he to blame?
Yes and no. The Jack Johnson and Olli Maatta pairing is a disgrace. Maatta's soft play has lead to many scoring opportunities and he's currently pointless with a -3 rating. Jack Johnson still might need to adapt to the style of Penguins hockey. He is also pointless in his 1st 2 games as a Penguin with a -2 rating. Matt Murray has to step up with his play as well 11 goals in 2 games is unacceptable especially for a goalie who led the team to back to back Stanley Cup victories. His glove side has not progressed like I wished for.
I understand that it is still very early in the season. But as a team effort, the Penguins need to step up before they fall behind in an up-for-grabs Eastern Conference.
