The Penguins lost Tom Kuhnhackl, Carter Rowney, and Josh Jooris via free agency this year. The Penguins PK was ranked 17th in the league out of 31. The biggest problem was that the bottom 6 was not producing offensively. In 69 games, Tom Kuhnhackl had only 8 points, and for Carter Rowney just a lousy 5 points in 41 games.
But, DAD IS BACK! Matt Cullen returned this offseason on a one year deal with the penguins for $650,000, a very good deal for the pens who were very cap stricken at the time and still needed to sign RFA Jamie Oleksiak to a deal. Cullen was a big part in the Penguins back-to-back Stanley cup championships run. He is definitely a better replacement over Tom Kuhnhackl or Carter Rowney.
RFA Riley Sheahan also re-signed a one year deal with the penguins. Riley Sheahan and Matt Cullen could be the #1 PK Unit for the penguins on opening night. #2 PK Unit would look like Brassard and Hagelin who can fly and make plays to clear the puck. I Predict the Penguins will be a top 10 penalty killing team in 2018-2019.
