I still remember vividly the 02/03 season. The Colorado Avalanche we're still in a dynasty with the likes of Peter Forsberg, Joe Sakic, Milan Hedjuk, Alex Tanguay and Patrick Roy. Forsberg led the league in scoring with a 106 point campaign (29G, 77A), and a league leading +52. Forsberg captured the Hart & Art Ross trophy only to be followed up by a defeat in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Minnesota Wild. I will not deny the fact that Forsberg use to be one, if not the most elite player in the National Hockey League, perhaps even the entire world.
After a dismal 06/07 campaign where Forsberg only played a total of 57 games, scoring 55 points (13G, 42A) plagued by injuries is it still worthy to pay him a salary upwards of $3 million dollars?. Forsberg has once missed an entire season, and has only played up to 90% of games for seven seasons. He's has had a magnitude of injuries stemming from groin issues, knee problems and even slight concussions.
Many people will suggest that Forsberg will take a pay cut, rightfully so. Forsberg agent Don Baizley has said that Forsberg is still another 2 or 3 months away from making a final decision whether or not to hang up the skates or try and win another Stanley Cup. Plunty of teams have showed interest in Forsberg's services such as Detroit, Vancouver, Colorado and Ottawa are to name a few. This has some of the potential teams fans scared.
Should you be willing to pay a substantial amount for Forsberg's services? Many people will say that if you have the cap space, he's somebody that can put your team over the edge and lead them to a Stanley Cup. That's what happened last year at the NHL trade deadline. The Philadelphia Flyers traded Peter Forsberg to the Nashville Predators in exchange for highly touted prospect Ryan Parent, Scottie Upshall and a 1st & 3rd round selection in the 2007 NHL draft. That gamble that Nashville took ended up backfiring into a first round exit from the playoffs and a disgruntled fan base in Nashville.
If you we're an NHL General Manager, and had the cap space available would you be willing to pay Forsberg a substantial amount of money for only a few months service, and perhaps the likely hood of him suffering another foot injury?
Note: I'd just like to ask for any feedback, I'm new too blogging and have no prior writing experience and would like to know how to improve on quality
I'd love a player like Foppa on my team, but right now we don't really need him. The team chemistry is good right now, and we already have 2 great centers.
I soured a bit on Forsberg, but I think the Flyers will bring him back around Thanksgiving. Call it a hunch.
I hope to heck he comes to Ottawa.Heatley - Spezza - someoneVermette - Forsberg -AlfieThat would finally give us some scoring depth.
if Leafs trade Kubina, or bury him in the minors... I guarantee you, 100%, Forsberg is a bud
I love Peter, he is not only one of best players ever, but one of the best guys i have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He actually was pissed about a fan being so antsy to get his signature that he bumped Peter while he was singing a sweater for a little kid. I want him to get one more chance, but if it doesn't work he needs to retire. He has taken his share of punishment (and that of a few others) and probably should hang em up. But, either way, i predict this being his last season in the NHL (its a sad thought).
lol he said that he would come back to win a stanely cup not to miss the playoffs on a dismal team glucker. As for Ottawa, we got some cap space and Gerber's 3.7 that will get cleared. I say sign him since they need a legit scoring center to give depth. I'd give him 3.5 or 4. I wouldn't even care if he played a single regular season game I just want him for the playoffs. Anyone who actually watched Nashville get beat in the first round saw that Foppa is still dominant. He was Nashvilles best player along with Radulov.
I'll take him and would love to have him, but only if the $$$ make sense. With a cap to deal with, you can't tie up serious money in a player as injury prone as Forsberg.
