If at first you don't succeed, try seven more times.
The Penguins powerplay was pretty lousy all night long, while not really generating that many good scoring opportunities in the process.
But the Pens decided eight was enough when right-handed defenseman Kris Letang scored in the left slot on a cross-ice feed from Sidney Crosby for the game-winning goal with about eight minutes to go, and led the Pens to a 3-1 win at the Igloo.
Through about 45 minutes of play, it was yet another sluggish performance for the Pens. The Coyotes, who were playing in their final game of a four-game road trip, looked like the team that was well-rested. Phoenix was first to the puck most of the night, and were definitely the more physical team.
The Pens got outplayed for most of the first period, but they got on the scoreboard first when the Pens' fourth line scored on a nice backhanded centering pass from Georges Laraque to Max Talbot that beat Ilja Bryzgalov to make it 1-0.
The second period was scoreless, but Jordan Staal committed two separate tripping penalties for a four minute Coyotes powerplay. The Pens killed the 2nd period portion of the powerplay, but Shane Doan scored early in the 3rd period from the right slot on a wrist shot to tie the game at 1.
About midway through the third period a team was whistled for too many men on the ice, and for once it wasn't the Penguins. On the ensuing powerplay, the Pens finally connected on the aforementioned Letang goal.
The Penguins put the game away with about five minutes to go when Tyler Kennedy continued his impressive play on a slapper from the left slot that beat Bryzgalov to complete the scoring.
The Pens now embark on a highly anticipated trip to Western Canada to face the Oilers (Wednesday), Flames (Thursday), and Canucks (Saturday). The Pens wrap up the road trip in Philly next Tuesday.
