According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, word around the league is that the Flyers are gaining interest in Sundin and it's speculated that Holmgren may be willing to move Jeff Carter and a 1st round pick for Mats Sundin.
My Take: At first glance, this is quite a shocker as Philly is one of the deepest teams down the middle with Briere and Richards in addition to Carter. Add that to the fact that Carter is a 23 year old prized prospect of the Flyers, currently heading for a 50+ pt season, and it really becomes a headscratcher.
Currently with 17 out of a possible 20 pts in their last 10 games, the Flyers are scorching hot and soaring up the standings. Is it possible that Holmgren feels he could win it all this season? That's one way of looking at it, especially with Ottawa faltering lately and Heatley out for a while.
But this could be the interesting part about the ordeal: the Cap World, and here's why. Heading into this offseason, the Flyers would have approximately $49M already tied up into their team, and that's not counting notable free agents: RFA's Carter and Umberger, and UFA's Smith and Vandermeer. And another thing to keep in mind is that next season they'd have to start negotiating a long-term contract for impending UFA Biron if they want to keep him around.
Assuming the camp increases to somewhere around 54-55M, how can they sign these guys with only about 5-6M to play with? What would their defense look like?
So really, the Flyers need to ask themselves whether they'd be willing to lose two of their top four defencemen? Or would they rather lose their talented youngsters to offer sheets?
Although I still don't understand the reseasoning behind trading Carter for a UFA, even of Sundin's calibre, it would surely be a desperation move. Basically, the team would have to assume that they have a good chance at winning it all this season, and that they feel they would lose Carter next season to draft picks. If for whatever reason the Flyers decide to trade Carter in a Sundin package, they better demand that at least Ian White is coming the other way, a cheap, young offensive D-man already under contract for 3 years.
