Flyers make subtle, but key moves

Today the Flyers have announced the signings of three players: Ossi Vaananen, Glen Metropolit, Nate Currey and Nate Raduns. They also acquired Patrick Hersley and Ned Lukacevic in exchange for Denis Gautheir and a 2nd Round Pick in 2010. Ossi Vaananen, 6'4" 212 lbs, signed a one year deal at $1 million. This signing adds a veteran presence and physical play from the backend the team was seeking. Vaananen has played 430 games in the NHL tallying 57 points, but he makes up for his lack of points with his great defensive play. Vaananen will return to the NHL from the SEL next year.

Glen Metropolit signed a two-year deal with the Flyers, terms are undisclosed. Metropolit will likely replace Jim Dowd on the 4th line and occasionally play on the 3rd line. Metropolit had 33 points last year for the Bruins. This signing adds a very good veteran presence to the bottom 6 as well as a clear upgrade over our previous 4th line center.

Nate Raduns signed a one-year contract on a two-way deal. This deal mainly serves as forward depth for the Philadelphia Phantoms. The interesting part about this signing is he was a former teammate of Andreas Nodl. This will probably help Nodl adjust better to hockey in the AHL.

Sean Currey signed a one-year contract on a two-way deal. This adds another young defenseman to the slew of them the Flyers already have. Currey has put up decent stats in the AHL, but has yet to appear in an NHL game. This signing will help the Phantoms by adding another player to their already deep defense.

Today the Flyers have announced the trade of defenseman Denis Gauthier along with the seconds round pick to LA for two prospects, LW Ned Lukacevic and D Patrik Hersley. The removal of Gauthier clears up some much needed cap room and also adds two more prospects to the already strong Phantoms. Lukacevic who player fairly well for the Reading Royals of the ECHL and will try to crack the Phantoms roster who is currently a little low on LWs. Hersley had an off year for the Royals as he was injured most of the year, only playing 20 games, yet he still manage 18 points. He also posted a dominant playoff performance with 9 points in 13 games. He will fight for a spot on the Phantoms, but will likely play in the ECHL since their is already an over abundance of defenseman.

Sp far I think Homer has done a decent job. He isn't making any big signings, but the ones he has signed have been crucial yet cheap.
