I can't get the thought of an Islanders Rangers Winter Classic at Yankee Stadium out of my head. I want it. Bad.
Ya know what else? I think we deserve it. All of us. Islanders fans, Rangers fans, hockey fans, baseball fans, New Yorkers, Long Islanders, Earthlings, and my dog.
We put up with a lot of garbage. On the ice and off. So if you've got a chance to do something as ridiculously fantastic as this, you
really should make it happen. For us.
We deserve the Islanders vs. Rangers at Yankee Stadium on New Year's Day 2009.
Join me in adding your reasons why in the comments below.
Go ahead, revel in the bipartisan glow of electronic back patting.
The Islanders/Rangers rivalry deserves a bigger stage like this every so often. It's that good.
I actually think that it wouldn't work for two reason - 1. Weather, it's just a bit too warm in the winters for an ice bowl not to be a serious challenge for the ice makers. 2. Marketing Agenda, it would not serve the NHL's prupose to market to a broad audience with the proximity of those two teams. Granted I think this past year's Ice Bowl cities were close, I think it is unlikely the one city/area with 2 teams will get the ice bowl. If the Ice Bowl does come to the NYC area, it will be Rangers vs. someone else.
I wonder what's wrong with Shea Stadium or Giants Stadium.
the last thing the NHL wants is the islanders involved in their showcase game.if it were held at yankee stadium the league would want the rangers versus either detroit, boston, or the philadelphia in that order with the outside possibility of another appearance by the penguins. i think they got it right, the stanley cup champs against a division rival. the last event at yankee stadium should be a yankee game.
Meh...New York had its day last year.
I like this idea, and I think it would be a bigger hit than the one reported in Chicago. That said, I can't see Yankees management letting the swan song of their stadium be anything but a Yankees game.I don't like being only able to read every other comment...maybe it's the IE i have here at work, but it's dsitracting..
I haven't seen any actual "reasons" for having let another Eastern Conference focus that completely ignores the Western Conference in favor of providing added benefits to Eastern Conference teams. Just thinking you "deserve it" isn't a reason.Clearly, at this time, there would be a tremendous interest in the Western Conference Original Six matchup of the current Stanley Cup Champion Red Wings against the up-and-coming Chicago Blackhawks, with all their top young talent. A much better choice.
The last thing that should be played at Yankee Stadium should be a baseball game, not a hockey game...not being a baseball fan myself, i still think for the home that Ruth built, there should be a final pitch, not the final drop of a puck.

I completely agree with you mightyquinn, the last game at yankees stadium will be a baseball game. I might be bias here, but I think the Winter Classic should be an annual event at I dont know, Buffalo. Just like Dallas and Thanksgiving. I would love to see a Winter Classic in Buffalo against the Leafs or Sens.
I think that in time the Islanders and Rangers should have a bigger stage such as a winter classic. To tell me however that the Red Wings and Blackhawks are a better choice is a bit one sided. The Islanders and Rangers have the best rivalry and atmosphere at games because so many of the other teams fans show up at both arena's. It's very college like, and if you don't believe me then go the the coliseum or garden this year to see a game.
i agree with f0ppa..you had your day last year..and id like to add that new york isnt the center of the universe..detroit vs chicago is a far betterrivalry..with 2 original 6 teams
The last game played at Yankee Stadium should be a Yankee's game, not a hockey game.
