As a new Packers fan I don't have the long term idolization most do, so Favre comes off kinda spoiled here when he says they didn't try hard enough to talk him out of retiring. I'm assuming he is still under contract to them and now he wants to go play elsewhere.
I am running out of patience with contract signings lately - its that time of year in the NHL when so much negotiating gets done .. but we have cases where a team is signing a Russian whose team there want compensation and a Russian team is signing on Russian who are still under contract to his NHL team. Teams wanting to trade or waive players who they signed to No Trade or No Move contracts. On top of that teams have signed players up for 7 year deals and some are talking 10 *edit - make that 11. Agents beware. I hold you accountable too. Its all "Show me the Money" talk up front, but down the road when the love affair sours, when the money is too rich for the team and the player hasn't lived up to the potential, or when you're the player and someone else's grass is greener (ice is smoother) there is no such thing as No Fault Divorce. GMs and Players, you are negotiating and agreeing to a contract between Player and Team, you both agree to the terms of it. If you can't negotiate your way FAIRLY and AGREEABLY out of it, live with it .. and don't do it putatively. Team owners, before you hire on that new GM, see how many contracts he negotiated that weren't worth honouring.
Players, you are gifted with skills that have been honed with years of hard work, countless hours of practice and your parents' and coaches' commitment to you. You are playing a game, living the life, millions can only dream of. There is more to life than money. Chose your agent, your team and your terms carefully.

read the contract, sign the contract, fulfill your part of the contract. i guess it must be a lot harder than it sounds
The thing that gets me about McCabe's situation though is that every time a player demands a trade... the team obliges... I can not remember a team ever telling a guy who wanted out "No, you are staying put and honouring your contract"... so why is it when the Leafs have made it clear that they have no interest in retaining his services Bryan McCabe refuses to give... he could essentially choose his destination with the leverage granted by his NTC... it just seems like the person wanting to end the relationship always has the power in these situations and I can't see a happy resolution for Bryan McCabe who ultimately deserves better.

Thanks for the comments. As for McCabe, while not familiar with the whole situation, I think ultimately, it comes down to his performance hasn't lived up to the contract he signed. The Leafs can bench him or buy him out. If the Leafs bench him, I can see him filing a grievance with the union. It may not bode well for the Leafs who may be harder pressed to attract quality players than they already are, but it won't help McCabe's career much either if his poor performance is further highlighted and other teams are scared away from him. If McCabe really wants to play, its time for him to show and tell . Show the leafs he's capable of earning his high contract and tell the fans why it is he wants to stay put and earn back their respect.

Ahhhh pengal... living in that blissful world where money is not the be all and end all and players play for the love of the game. Those days are behind us unfortunately. Now days we have evil agents whispering in players ears about getting more money, holding out to get more money, leaking rumours to inflate their clients' value... and with the signings we've seen this off-season, it's working. Stop the insanity... but you can't. The insanity will roll on... A couple of signings have my interest - Hossa for 1 year with Detroit, clearly not for the money and wants to win The Cup as well as Shean Donovan signing with the Sens at a huge discount to stay in Ottawa because he loves the city and the team. A rarity. We'll see what happens when Alfie's option years kick in... Great blog. Maybe Favre can come up to the CFL? ;)
