Montreal. Friday, October 17, 2008. The Juniors returned home from a 5 game road trip on Friday night to host the Huskies from Rouyn-Noranda. Montreal, weary from their recent stretch of 3 games in 3 nights(Oct. 10-12), were in desperate need of a goal as the Juniors had not scored since the 13th minute of their 3rd period of their 4-1 win over Halifax, a total of 126:59 minutes.

The Juniors went 2-3 on the road trip and were very excited to be home. Here are the results from 5 game roadtrip;

Despite being shutout 3 times on the road trip, Montreal still managed to get 2 valuable wins on the road and to return from the trip in first place of the Telus Western Division with an overall record of 6-6. The Juniors offense struggled against Moncton, Saint-John and Rimouski, but exploded to take advantage of Victoriaville, winning 8-4. Angelo Esposito and Nick Layton notched 6 and 5 points, respectively, in the win over Les Tigres.


Montreal Juniors 3 - Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 2



The last time these two teams met, September 29th in Montreal, the Huskies got the better of the Juniors in a 4-2 win. The Juniors, who had a 3 game winning streak at home coming into tonight’s contest were very eager to get back onto home ice.

After being on the receiving end of 2 shutouts in their last 2 games, Montreal did not waste anytime in erasing their goal-less drought when Nick Layton got the Juniors onto the board only 2 minutes and 36 seconds into the first period. The power play goal, assisted by Luke Adam and T.J. Brennan, was Layton’s 5th of the season and snapped Montreal’s scoring drought at 129 minutes and 35 seconds of play.

Eager to keep up the pace, the fired up Juniors kept after the Huskies in the early going of the first period. Montreal added to their lead at the 5 minute and 50 second mark when Luke Adam scored his 6th goal of the season, beating Rouyn-Noranda goaltender Matthew Dupod to give the Juniors a 2-0 after only 6 minutes of play. Layton and Esposito assisted on the Adam goal, which came only 3 minutes and 14 seconds after snapping the drought. Dropping 2 quick goals, the Huskies were able to find their way back into the game, matching the Juniors 10 shots taken in the first period and keeping the defecit at only 2 goals.

Heading into the second period Montreal kept the momentum in their favor as Guillaume Asselin fired home his 4th goal of the season, on the power play, 5 minutes and 36 seconds into the period. Vincent Bourgeois got the only assist on the goal, pushing the Juniors lead to 3-0. It was at this point that the Juniors began to get comfortable. Sitting back to protect their 3-0 lead, the Huskies began to pressure the Juniors. It did not take long before Rouyn-Noranda began to mount a comeback. The Huskies broke Jake Allen’s shutout at the 11 minute 28 second mark of the period when Jared Struthers scored his 5th goal of the season. The Huskies did not let up, pressuring Nick Layton into taking a penalty less than 2 minutes after the goal. On the ensuing power play Huskies D-man Ben Lacomte fired home a shot, beating Jake Allen and bringing Rouyn-Noranda within one goal. The rest of the 2nd period was very tight, ending with the Juniors hanging onto a 3-2 lead over the Huskies.

The 3rd period saw both teams trade minor penalties with Rouyn-Noranda keeping the action mainly in the Juniors zone. Although Montreal was stifled by the Huskies offense, outshot 11-4 in the period, Jake Allen and veteran defenceman T.J. Brennan were able to lead their teammates to play a solid defensive game, holding Rouyn-Noranda off the score sheet and hanging on for the 3-2 win.

Montreal’s win, its 7th of the season, gives them 14 points and places them in a tie with Saint John and Victoriaville for 7th place overall, 1st place in the Telus Western Division.

The Juniors have little time to recuperate from this evening’s action as they play host to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagels this afternoon at 4:00 pm at the Verdun Auditorium.
