Canucks vs. Redwings

To many Vancouver fans, the Luongo injury was/ is bad news, but to those that have been following the team closely, many know that the team is a tight knit united that wasn't going to shake in its boots and collapse. This team had already won 2 games in a row with Sandman in net, and the red hot trio of Demitra and the Sedins has been looking like a fit that won't be broken.

The game may have looked dominated if one were to look at the score sheet based on shots on goal, but the Canucks dominated the game in terms of quality scoring chances. Canucks had the pressure early on in the game, and still kept it on after the Samuelsson back hand goal, which Sanford would definitely liked to have had back. The period came to a close at 1-0 for detroit, but the Canucks had a great effort.

The second period finally saw the refs use their whistles, but Vancouver used their legs and killed off a Detroit 5 on 3 that looked like was going to put a nail in the coffin. The Red wings have been dangerous on the powerplay against the Canucks this season, so the penalty kill was huge. Taylor Pyatt scored his third of the season, in a very sloppy play by the detroit defensemen, and the pylon, as he has become known this season, had a great game, finally using his physical size to the teams advantage. Although the Canucks were greatly outshot, the momentum was swinging to the homeside.

The third period was full of decent opportunities for each team, nothing too close, but it wasnt until a little over three minutes left that Pavel Datysuk did the inevitable, scoring through the legs of the Canucks defensemen. With a team as good as Detroit, the win seemed almost guaranteed to be in the bank for the wings, but the Canucks had other plans. Barely after a minute later, Daniel Sedin tipped in an Alexander Edler shot, assisted by Mason Raymond. Hopefully this will get the speedster out of his funk and he will string together another point streak. The Sedins have been criticized for disappearing at times in the season, but currently they have been the model of consistency, perhaps because of a consistent linemate.

It was obvious in overtime who the hungrier team was, with Ryan Kesler combining with Pavol Demitra to almost win the game within the first thirty seconds, hitting the post and Osgood covering it up. On a Johan Franzen penalty, the Sedins and Demitra went to work, setting up the Finish MacInnis in Sami Salo who nailed the game winning goal.

The game was a hardworking effort by all 18 skaters, and Sanford made some exceptional saves. If one were to look at the glove save off willie mitchells skate one can be confident that this team has decent enough goaltendng to tide the team over til Roberto returns.
