Juniors Backup Berube Wins Goaltending Duel
Montreal. Friday, December 12, 2008. The Juniors beat the best team in the QMJHL on Sunday, a 5-2 win over the Shawinigan Cataractes, and then promptly lost number 1 centerman, Angelo Esposito, and number 1 netminder, Jake Allen, to Team Canada's World Junior training camp. Barring cuts, the 2 players will likely make the team and miss the next couple weeks of action for the Juniors.
Despite the loss of two of Montreal's best players, Juniors netminder JF Berube and company played a superb game. Berube made 35 saves in replacement of Allen, leading the Juniors to their second straight win, 3-2 over the Val D'Or Foreurs.
It was an intense game that featured battles up and down the ice. In the end, both teams racked up in excess of 40 penalty minutes combined and over 70 shots on goal. The Juniors grabbed an early lead and never looked back with goals from leading scorer Nick Layton, Captain Matt Fillier and Taylor MacDougall.
MacDougall scored the eventual game winner early in the 2nd period as both Berube and Foreurs goaltender Raffaele D'Orso were rock solid. Val D'Or's Maxime Sauve got the Foreurs close with a goal later in the 2nd, but the rest of the game was a defensive battle that was won by the Juniors.
With the win Montreal remains in 2nd place in their division with a record of 17-14-1. The Juniors have Saturday off before they play on the road in Chicoutimi on Sunday at 4pm.
