The Avs faced the Rangers, and wound up taking part in possibly their most embarrassing loss of the season. The game was out of hand from the get-go and unfortunately the return of Paul Stastny to the lineup hasn't been the spark plug fans had hoped for. The question we ask ourselves now is; what now?
With the trade deadline fast approaching, and a GM who has possibly the exact opposite attitude than our President Pierre Lacroix, Avs fans have lost their deadline passion lately. Things however will need to change this year.
Rumors keep floating around, many regarding Ryan Smyth, Milan Hejduk, Jordan Leopold, Brett Clark, Ruslan Salei and Marek Svatos. With the way this team is playing, we will have a top 5 draft pick in the entry draft, which should be the key in our offseason rebuilding plans, yes guys rebuilding. The plan this deadline needs to be getting younger, shedding salary and possibly grabbing a few more draft choices. Smyth (if he chooses to waive the NTC) would likely bring us all those things. I don't exactly mind trading him namely because he's a guy that you need if you're playoff ready, we will not be for maybe another two years. Drop the salary and cash in on some youth and picks...probably worthwhile if we want the quick rebuilding process (we do).
Hejduk was rumored to Pittsburgh for Jordan Staal. Umm YES! I don't know about you guys, but I don't even care that he plays center, namely because he has enough potential to warrant keeping 3 young core centers (Stastny, Wolski being the others) and seeing what happens. I'm not sure if Pittsburgh does this deal straight up, but I would love to see Staal in an Avs jersey.
Goaltending. We need a goalie, and that should be a primary concern of Giguere. With the number of goalies possibly available, Kari Lehthonen, Pascal Leclaire, Dan Ellis (maybe?), we should atleast make a pitch to these teams and whoever else might be out there, to secure a young goalie between the pipes, before trying to duke it out in the offseason for possibly only a couple worthy netminders, of which only Backstrom really comes to mind possibly a shot at Scott Clemmensson who really saved New Jerseys season this year. Either way, we need a goalie and this year we have the movable assets to get one that we can actually call our #1 and mean it.
Out of all the names being tossed around, I'm pretty sure only our defensemen will be dealt, mainly because Giguere has never done anything significant deadline day and as much as I would love the old Pierre Lacroix Deadline Bonanza, I can't shake the feeling we will stay as is. Here's hoping Francois proves me wrong, because one cannot be content icing the team that played tonight.
Good read shevy! I agree on everything except Hejduk. Get a center in the draft and then put Wolski on the market on draft day.
