According to a report in the Wednesday edition of the Toronto Globe and Mail, the Leafs may have an interest in Rangers over-priced Defenseman Wade Redden and also Boston forward Peter Schaefer. The report mentions that the the Leafs have the cap room necessary to accomodate both players and also that the interest in Redden might mean they are close to dealing Tomas Kaberle and/or Pavel Kubina.
Interesting. I thought that Burke was brought to Toronto to revive the downtrodden franchise; not to push it even further into the dark ages by making a move like that. Redden has 5 years and a cap-killing Average Annual Salary (AAS) of $6.5 million. What motivation does Burke have for making this move? He's already made clear that he would love to move up to select John Tavares in the draft this year and all indications are that it would require Luke Schenn or possibly Kaberle along with the #7 pick to move up with Tampa to the #2 spot. That is, however, assuming that the Islanders don't take Tavares #1 overall which I think they will. So is Burke ready to include one of his prized defenders in a deal to move up to select Tavares? Is that why he is interested in acquiring Redden; to offset the potential loss of one of his top defensemen? Or is it all just some complicated smoke screen designed to keep Burke's real agenda a secret?
Would Toronto really be willing to do a favor of that magnitude for the Rangers? I know that Burke and Sather are supposed to be friends but really? Would Kaberle or Kubina be a piece coming back to New York to off-set some of the salary? I'd love to dump Redden and his albatross contract and wouldn't mind taking on Kaberle in exchange. The Leafs can keep Kubina as far as I'm concerned. What an upgrade Kaberle would represent while clearing a killer cap hit from our ledger.
I get the sense that this is too good to be true; that someone out there is messing with us Rangers fans and getting our hopes up only to have them dashed when this move isn't made. Still, knowing that this will likely not come to fruition isn't stopping me from imagining what we could do in the UFA market to improve our roster for a cup run next year. How would Marian Hossa look skating next to Gomez? Maybe Gaborik can stay healthy and put up the numbers we all know he is capable of. Could Glen Sather orchestrate a deal with Ottawa for Dany Heatley if Redden were already moved to Torornto. Ah, the possibilities excite.
Damn, this would be incredible. But I don't believe the papers. The Ottawa Sun is bullshit, so are the Edmonton Journal, and New York Post. I'd be inclined to think this probably is too. And dude, beggars can't be choosers. I'd take Kubina in a second over Redden.
What I'd like to do is move Gomez to Toronto for Ponikarovsky. Sign Zherdev and Antropov, switch Antro to center, and have that trio skating together.
That's true, I looked at Kubina and he only has 1 year left on his deal at $5 million. We'd save $1.5 on this years cap and be free of the last 4 years of Redden's deal. I have a bad feeling that even if this deal were made that Sather would screw up and bring in some other expensive stiff that wouldn't help us get any further in the playoffs.
I'm not sure that Toronto would be interested in Gomez. Burke likes big, tough guys and Gomez is more a pretty boy. Then again he did make the move to acquire both Sedins when he was GM of the Canucks so anything is possible. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing Antropov back though I'm not sure what his price tag is going to be.
We're not going far into the playoffs any time soon, until we acquire a first line center, a real goal scoring winger(Cally may hit 30 next year, so maybe him), a PP quarterback, and a real captain.
If Burke can't reacquire the Sedins, he may go for Gomez. Toronto doesn't have much depth at center.
I like Dury but as a complementary player; not for what he is being paid for and expected of here. I have high hopes that Staal can develop more offense and we also have Sanguinetti and Del Zotto looming on the horizon. We definitely need an imposing offensive player that can net 40 goals a year. I'd be tempted to look at Gaborik if he were willing to take a 1 year deal to re-establish his market. We'll have to see what other teams offer him I guess.
if Burke gets redden from you guys that would be awesome for the leafs.. long live their god GM!!! tools
Burke is overrated as a GM in my opinion. He inherited that Anaheim team.
For some reason my message didn't post. I agree that Burke was lucky in Anaheim with respect to acquiring Nieds and Pronger. We'll see how he handles the challenge in Toronto.
"if Burke gets redden from you guys that would be awesome for the leafs.. long live their god GM!!! tools"That's great, I love a little facetiousness.
Looks like there may be some truth to this after all. Toronto just received an offer for Kaberle, and it was described as "unexpected".
what exactly does Toronto get out of any Redden trade? The guy has looked lost for three years... a complete shadow of the elite defenceman he was a half decade ago. To take on such a heavy cap hit has gotta be worth something in return... what would you guys give up to have a Kubina (5m, 1yr) for Redden (6.5, 5yr) trade?
A-Mar I am as perplexed as you; I don't have the foggiest. I would rather have Kaberle and therefore might be willing to include our first to get Kaberle and the $2.25 million annual cap savings for two years between the two contracts.
Additionally, Rangers Director of Player Personnel Gordie Clark, has said that the Rangers are interested in moving up where the talent is a little stronger in the draft. If that can't be accomplished then perhaps they will swing the type of deal I mentioned above.
well let see u want kubina for redden !!!!!thats a bit but a bit crazy
this is the deal :blake finger for redden 1st grachev get it or leave it
I never said I wanted Kubina for Redden. I said that according to the Toronto Globe and Mail, the Leafs have an interest in Redden. They also said that may be an indication the Leafs have a deal in place to move either Kubina or Kaberle. I was speculating as to what the Leafs may send NY in return for Redden if the report was even accurate.
leafspuck: "this is the deal :blake finger for redden 1st grachev get it or leave it"I leave that. We don't save any cap space with that move while giving up one of our best prospects and a first round pick. No way.
No. I will not fucking give up Grachev, even if it is to dump Redden.

Dead in the water anyway. Burke just shot down the Redden rumor as posted on Pierre LeBrun's blog on ESPN. I knew it was too good to be true.
good... I watched this guy a lot in Ottawa and I could see he was losing it before the Rangers ever made an offer... you would think that the pro scouts would have clued in that Redden's days as an elite player were over.
He definitely developed a coke problem after they lost in the Finals.
The only thing the rangers should be concentrating on is getting Heatly! Gomez, Dubinsky, (and if that is not enough throw in a 4th rounder in '12 or something) for Dany. That is an absolute win-win. As much as i love dubi, he at best could top out as a 50 point player, and his value will only go down from here. I've been praying to the hockey gods for this trade since december.
YOu guys are idiots if you think any GM is going to take Redden at this point - he has five years letf on his contract. The Rangers may have to give up all their draft picks for '09 and take Kubina back but I really do not see this happening.
I hope you aren't referring to me as an "idiot". If so then clearly you didn't read the post. I even said in there that it wouldn't make sense for Burke to do that.
